For our two cats, we bought 2 covered ones with a high walled base. They didn’t take to it well. Until… we removed the tops for 2 weeks. Got them used to the high walled bases. Then, we started putting the lids on and making sure we still scoop every day.
Maybe not.
It must, however, be Very Big Indeed.
Hey, jay-c, how is the Feline Pine with odour control? We have one cat who just reeks - we took her to the vet after many dietary changes, and the vet sat us down and gently broke the news that our cat is just a stank-ass, while my husband and I held each other and cried, believing ourselves doomed to the stench for the rest of kitty’s nine lives. We found immense relief with that Tidy Cats “Small Spaces” stuff, which was amazing, since we really hated all the other Tidy Cats litter. We made the switch on a whim, since we lived in a tiny apartment back then and it worked out perfectly. But now, in our new place, the litter box is on a hard floor instead of tucked inside a carpeted closet, and stank-ass is an enthusiastic digger, as well. So when I wake up in the morning and shuffle into the laundry room without my slippers on, there are little litter crumbles under my feet. This especially sucks when I’ve just stepped out of the shower and am feeling fresh and clean, and go to the dryer to get some nice, clean clothes, and my nice, clean feet get a coating of litter on them, causing me to do the heebie-jeebie dance. Blergh.
Anyway, does the pine stuff have a nice, strong, pine-y smell? Does it cover up the cat smell decently? It doesn’t even have to be as great with smells as the Small Spaces stuff, since we no longer live in a small space, but it’s still near the kitchen, and I wouldn’t want stank-ass to waft in on us during dinner…
I am considered by some around here to be a nut on Probiotics, and I’ll make their case even stronger by saying that Probiotics may help your kitties “stink-ass”. They even sell pet versions of probiotics at larger Pet stores, but if you get the regular old human version, and empty a bit of a capsule on Stinkies food for a while, you may end up with less stank. Or get the pet version.
I am not a vet, nor do I even play on on TV.
In my experience, the Feline Pine is not significantly better than regular litter at covering up stank-ass, but that could be because I only use an inch of pine in the bottom of the box - can’t really bury things that way. Unfortunately, our rescue kitty Bob (named so because he’s sans tail) has a strong case of the stank-ass as well. Just be prepared to scoop out solid waste once a day, and it shouldn’t be an issue. Where Feline Pine really excels though, is urine odor. Since I’ve switched to it, I have never noticed pee smell, even when standing directly over the box, and that’s with an inch of litter being hosed frequently by two cats.
