Help! Cat question

Can anybody help me find a scoopable litter that won’t track all over the place. The one we use is called Premium Choice Extra with less tracking formula.

Hah! The boys track it all over the house. It gets everywhere, including on the bed. Ugh. The carpet leading to the bathroom (where we keep the box) feels like a gravel driveway.

Like the pirate with the steering wheel sticking out of his pants, it’s driving me nuts. Please help. Thanking you, essvee

Have you tried a mat under the litter box so the first thing they step on is something sort of spiny to open their pads and leave the litter there?

You can get cat mats in pet stores or try a piece of that astro turf type stuff that home depot type stores sells as indoor outdoor carpeting.

Yes. WE have a mat and a step on thingy. They will perform all sorts of contortions to not step on it. They jump out of the box and spray litter everywhere.

We have a small apartment and only one place to put the box so I cant surround it with astro turf or such. Thanks though.

Ugh… will they go in a covered box? That makes it harder for them to avoid where you want them to step when done. Although you don’t want to alienate them from the box extirely!

Unfortunately I don’t know too much about scoopable litters… we use regular clay and keep the boxes in the basement (not an option for you I know)

Another hint is to use a litter box with a lid. Then you can make a “runner” of the mat that they can’t avoid stepping on. Also, they won’t be able to kick the litter out of the box in all directions.

I use for Tidy Cat for multiple cats and I never had a problem with litter being anywhere except right around the opening of the littler box. I know that it is a little more expensive then some other litters but it really is so much better then anything else I have ever used.

Do you have a litter box with a cover, or is it open on all sides? If they are spraying litter when they jump, if sounds like an open litter box…

Try a box that has a hood and a small exit hole. If that still does not work, face the exit to a wall so they HAVE to walk on the mat to get out.

Forget the special spiny kitty mats they sell at the pet store. Get a regular rubber car floor mat. The deep grooves that are supposed to catch water, slush, and snow also catch loose litter quite well, and the cats (well, ours anyway) don’t mind walking on it.

Since our litter boxes have hoods and door openings, there is only one way that the cats can enter and exit the box: via the car mat. Most of the loose litter on their feet is caught by the car mat as they leave, and we can pick up the mat and dump the loose litter back in the box at the next cleaning.

I have a car mat and a covered box. I swear. They jump to the side to avoid the mat. I swear. I can’t do anything more about the flooring stuff.

And even though, they walk down a carpet to get to the bedroom, the bed still has litter on it! ARRRGH!

Do they have really fluffy paws? Maybe trimming the hair between the pads will help?

Anon, thanks for your helpful suggestions. Unfortunately, these are grumpy old men kitties who I’ve never been able to even comb. No clippage for them. Jerks.

essvee, try hitting them on the head with a heavy blunt object and then trimming their hair while they are stunned.

Just kidding.

Seriously though, you don’t brush them or trim their nails? Maybe you need to start working on that with them. Now that I think about it my cat is short haired and her claws are always trimmed so perhaps that is why she doesn’t make a mess with the litter.

Ahh, grumpy old men kitties. In fact, they may even being doing it on purpose knowing that type!

I use MAXX Scoop for my cat and I think it’s great. There’s MUCH less dust then with the old stuff I was using, including less litter getting tracked all over. The litterbox is covered, which helps to keep everything in, and it also has its door placed fairly high up off the floor, so he flings less litter out when he’s playing around in there.

Actually, he spends more time “scratching” outside the box and not actually scratching at the litter to bury his mess. so the fact that he’s dumb also helps to keep my floor clean.

I use Purina Maxx Scoop Multi-Cat Formula with Heath Guard. Long enough name?

I have a covered litter box and it’s on a carpeted area. The litter doesn’t seem to track very far from the box at all and my cat has very furry toes.

I only have one cat even though I’m using multi-cat litter, it just kind of worked out that way.

They are mean old men. Manfred won’t even bury his shit, and it smells like Satan’s ass. He also weighs in at 22 pounds of hard fat. He is truly the Debbil Kitty. If I even tried to clip their nails… (shudder)

Thanks for the litter tips. Anything should be better than what we’ve got going right now.

We have a litter box that has a little internal tunnel and ramp that they have to walk down to get out - it seems to cut down on the tracking somewhat. It’s called the BoodaDome. It’s out of stock at the online PetCo, but maybe you can find one.

thanks, enugent. that looks like the kitty bomb.

As a dog owner, I find that freakin’ hilarious.

As a person who wishes she could have a cat, but is allergic, I admire my in-laws crafty anti-catlitter-tracking construction.

A sheet of Astro-turf under and around a large Rubbermaid-typestorage bin with sides of about two feet high, the sides keep them from being able to kick sand everywhere, the angle and height of the walls meant they had to land somewhere on the pad, and even the grossly obese (28 lbs:eek:)cat could get in and out.

Y:GrumpyOldManKitties:MMV, of course.

That catbox dome is so cool. It would also prevent my weird little kitty from scratching the walls around the box to try to bury her poo. Of course, the cats would probably do what they always do - completely ignore it if we spent more than a dollar on it.

Here is my solution. I call it a litterbox box.
You do have to have room for it, but when I only had two cats (and two boxes) I had a smaller litterbox box. It’s homemade, cost about $20 to make. The sides are premade shelving boards, the bottom (I know it looks like sand, but it’s not) is the stuff like plywood, you can get it in a bunch of colors and patterns. People put it on their walls, it comes in big sheets, but I can’t remember what it’s called. Glue and screw sides to bottom, and that’s it.

It cleans up easy, I just run the vacuum cleaner around in there to pick up the litter, and take a sponge to wipe up any pawprints.
