Track-free cat litter?

I’ve seen another thread on “best” cat litter, but I’m looking to be more specific. Odor control doesn’t matter so much since I clean the box every day, but…

What’s the best litter at STAYING IN THE FRIGGIN BOX? I sweep my floor every day too, and every day I sweep up bits 10 feet away (which is the line where the carpet starts). Tidy Cat is so fine (particle-wise) that the cats raise dust clouds while digging, and I can wipe almost any surface in the place and find residue.

Try the crystals.

What crystals?

Make sure you have a hood on the litter box, that cuts down a lot on the dust. There are plastic “walk-off” mats you can get, or try a square of carpet.

The walk-off mats don’t do much good with determined flinger, which one of ours is, but the combination of hooded box, turning the opening to the wall, and walk-off mat reduces tracked litter to about 18 inches from the box. Not perfect, but a sight better than having it everywhere.

I use a big wooden box and place both my hooded litterboxes inside it. The wooden box is square, and has sides about 10" high. Low enough the cats have no problem jumping in, but high enough to keep the litter off the floor. I used those cheap sticky tiles to put a floor down inside, painted the wood white, there you go. It does require a bit of space, both litterboxes are side by side with about a foot of space in front of the openings to the litterboxes, but it works.

They have litter now that consists of crystals the size of fine gravel. These track a lot less than the dust.

I have very limited space. I’m unwilling to put the litterbox on carpeting, which just leaves the bathroom and kitchen. I’ve put the litterbox in a lower cabinet in the kitchen, and it can’t be hooded because the hood won’t fit. However, the whole cabinet itself acts as a hood, as the box fits in with maybe a 1/2 inch to spare on the sides.

My cats aren’t especially energetic at digging or flinging, but some ends up out on the floor in front of the cabinet. The stuff that scatters far and wide is the dust that gets raised, and whatever clings to their feet as they walk away.

I used to put down a kind of runner in front of the box, but that turns out to be harder to clean than just the bare floor.

So more specifically, anyone know of litter than minimizes dust, and doesn’t stick to feet? It would seem that larger granules/crystals/whatever would be superior for this, but I don’t know whether a “larger” size would clump and absorb the liquids.

The crystals do a great job of absorbing liquids and controlling odor. They don’t clump, though.

I think my cat comes out with an upturned paw full of litter then flings it as far as he can. Bastard.

I have an automatic scooping literbox and the crystals wont work in those. :frowning:

I lopped the legs off my cat and installed metal roller skate wheels instead. I use a real narrow litter box he just skates over and does his bidness. He’s easy to take for walks, but ya gotta hang on good going downhill or he’s tough to catch. Leaves marks on the kitchen linoleum when he skids into walls, but they come off easy enough.

[sub]I am just kidding[/sub]

No, that gives me an idea though. What if I dipped my cats paws into that liquid plastic stuff they use to coat plier handles in. Hmmm… yeah.

feline pine is fairly good. with a mat in frount of the box for kitty to wipe/scratch on, it tends to keep things where they should be.

feline pine turns to sawdust when it is wet. you only have to scoop poo poo.

In-line skate wheels, or the older style fat ones? The in-line ones would track less litter around, I spose, but the fat ones would be easier to balance. Oh hell, cats are supposed to be good at balancing, so I’ll go in-line.

An amazingly ignorant litter question, since I’ve (well, my cats) never used litter that doesn’t clump: if it doesn’t, how do you clean the box? Just give it a few days, empty it completely, and refill?

Old ones, like these.

That’s what I did, but only once per week. It smells so much nicer with the crystals. (Seems to me that with the clumping stuff I have to replace the litter every single day to avoid the reek.) And the cat doesn’t kick them all over the place, either. Unfortunately, the grocery store by my place stopped selling the stuff, so I have to find another store. I think they were Tidy Cat crystals. The clumping litter with crystals in it doesn’t even compare. The crystals cost me about 8 bucks per box. Half a box per week works fine for us.
