Oh, boy, my first new cat adventure since 1998. We are about to go look at cats, preferably but not necessarily kittens, to find a pair to bring home for our geriatric DLH. We had one cat disappear a while ago (probably hit by a car, though we don’t know for sure and there are a lot of unleashed dogs in our area) and one had to be euthanized recently because she had a massive bowel tumor. So now we’re looking for litter mates or other congenial kitties because we and the remaining cat are missing the constant cat action only multiple cats can provide.
I am so jealous! I would highly recommend a Siamese or a Siamese mix. I have the most adorable cat that I adopted from a shelter - he’s some kinda crazy Siamese/snowshoe mix (classic, applehead Siamese look - white paws - and extra toes!) and he is the funniest, most talkative, loviest, acrobatic cat I’ve ever met. He just keeps me laughing!
I hope you’ll do most of it at your local SPCA. No need spending hard earned money on animals when they give perfectly loving ones for the price of shots, etc. I hope you find animals that will give you many years of love and companionship.
We looked at cats at three rescue places (all of them no-kill facilities). The kittens available just didn’t move us, but a 1 year old calico and a very slightly older tabby did. The calico is about evenly black/striped and orange/striped, with more white on her underside. She endeared herself to me by using my shoulder as a step to get from one level of a cat tree to another. She’s the lapcat of the two–very demanding and physically affectionate. The tabby is smaller by 3.5 pounds and has had to be extracted from hidey-holes for viewing, but she’s purred and relaxed a little, though she’s under the bed at the moment. Both cats are sacked out conducting a fairly cursory examination of the guest room that they’ll be sharing for about a week. I’ll take photos when they’re a little more settled.
Now excuse me, I must go wallow in jealousy over your new additions and their sheer cuteness. I often wish I could add another kitteh or two to the family, but Himself has put his foot down and said that two is more than enough.
Yay, kitties! I’m glad that you decided to pick older cats. I think a lot of people don’t give them a chance because kittens are so cute, but the adult ones make great pets too.
