I remember seeing one that was a female nursing student from Arizona I think, who had this online relationship with some prettyboy on facebook. She even had some stupid ‘competition’ with her BFF.
Anyway it turned out that this guy was really some dumpy teenage girl who was trolling the nursing student out of some misplaced kind of revenge. I remember cracking up at how shocked SHOCKED :eek: she was to find out the guy she was crazy about was not who he said he was, nevermind the fact that she had never talked or skyped with him much less met him up to this point.
I’m so jaded from online dating; I’m actually more shocked when I meet someone who turns out to be exactly what they describe themselves (i.e. my wife) because I had so many situations where people tried to deceive me.
I really don’t get it- I mean, if you like the person, you’re probably gonna want to meet them in person (and have a physical relationship with them, etc) so what do they think lying is going to do? All the more reason, when I was online dating, to meet the person ASAP, to know one way or another so you’re not wasting your time.

I have started watching Catfish on Hulu and I’m hooked. This show is so interesting and intriguing. I’ve learned a lot so far, and am amazed at the lengths lonely people will go to, on both ends…
I have a question about S1E7, the show with “Karie Ann Peniche” and Joe. “Karie Ann” turned out to be Rose, who had gone to the same high school as Joe. She created this Karie Ann profile, (which is STILL up today!!!) and pretended to be a former Miss USA and had a Playboy shoot, was a model, all of that stuff.
Nev and Max checked out Karie’s FB page and contacted this one guy who was a friend, who communicated with Karie recently on her FB page. This guy called Nev back quickly and said he had indeed ‘met Karie Ann’ and that they had hooked up a couple of times. Seemed to check out.
Then, they contacted “Rose” because she was one of Karie’s FB friends. They met Rose, and Rose said she’d ‘worked’ with Karie in the past, for some modeling gigs… seemed to check out. (No one realized that this Rose was Karie Ann).
Then Nev and Max called Karie’s agent, her booking manager, or whatever you call that guy. Well, even HE said that indeed, he HAD hired Karie in the past for some modeling jobs. Now THIS is where I am confused… This agent was the person that sealed the facts for Nev and Max that Karie HAD to be real. This guy, he KNEW famous people…and he said he had HIRED Karie in the past. But HOW? How could he HIRE her and not realize that she was not who she really was? I mean, how did she even get paid for a job, with a fake name and all? I don’t get it. This is the part that confuses me. That agent, he sounded genuine.
Did he really hire Karie (Rose) as Karie and paid her in cash? What about contracts? Surely you have a contract? Surely you have to provide I.D. or something? Was this guy confused? How was Rose able to scam a booking agent like this?
She did say she had a lot of ‘friends’ who were “in” on this charade… but this agent?
And then the really crazy thing is, I checked to see if Karie Ann still had a FB page, and indeed there IS one, with all of these shots of ‘her’ with these famous people, on tv shows, talk shows, etc. How can this be? Did everyone miss out on the memo that this woman is a fraud? How can she keep this up???
Kari Ann Peniche is a real person who won the Miss Oregon Teen USA title in 2002, worked as as a model, and appeared in a number of celebrity rehab reality shows.
Rose pretended to be Kari Ann Peniche. Information provided by Rose as Kari Ann Peniche was false. Information about the real Kari Ann Peniche (such as confirmation from her booking agent and the Facebook page of the real Kari Ann) is true.

Oh, and I remember Kari Ann Peniche from Dr. Drew’s show. She is one of the most vile, evil, soulless, vapid, worthless pieces of human garbage I’ve ever seen.

So now I see, Kari Ann Peniche IS real— it’s just that this girl Rose took her identity and used it for herself. Did no one think to even look at the FB page’s URL? Usually that can tip you off to if a profile is real or fake. And now they have “Verification” too. They didn’t have that back then. Wow, this Rose chick is a whacko!!
And :::raising hand::: I do! I DO! I remember when MTV had videos, hahaha. Back in the mid 80’s! I was a teen. It was the perfect time to be a teen, in high school, with MTV! Yeah! What happened to that channel?!!

I stopped watching “Catfish” around the time I started this thread.
I just started watching it myself. It’s amusing. Entertaining. Passes the time. Not sure on how real it is or how staged it might be…but it keeps the attention, at least in my case, so call it a new guilty pleasure of mine.
If you enjoy the T.V. show, you should definitely seek out the documentary that started it all (Catfish). It gives a lot of insight into Nev, the origins of the show, and why it’s called “Catfish”. It’s also fun to speculate on how much of the original documentary was staged.
It’s both real and staged. How it actually works is…
[spoiler]…that the perpetrator is the one who contacts the show. They answer a ‘catfishing’ casting call. The show then gets the victim to cooperate. So they know they’re being catfished by the time filming begins. Just not necessarily who’s behind the mask. Nev and Max, meanwhile, are genuinely kept in the dark and forced to do their ‘detective’ work.
So it’s much more coordinated than is presented on screen. But it’s still a real mystery to Nev, Max and the victim. And real ‘investigations’ are conducted. [/spoiler]
