Among other things, the guy made political action videos using an actual aborted baby’s remains on an altar as a prop. Yes, I’d like to see more (and much harsher) action taken in abuse cases but I’m not going to say “Well, I guess if they didn’t do THAT then THIS is cool as well.” It’s not a zero sum game and not acting correctly about A doesn’t make B suddenly acceptable.
In November 2016, Pavone filmed a video at the Priests for Life headquarters, urging support for Trump. The video was staged with the body of an aborted baby laid before Pavone on what appeared to be an altar.
Zurek said soon after the video’s release that he would open an investigation into the incident, calling it “against the dignity of human life” and “a desecration of the altar,” adding that “the action and presentation of Father Pavone in this video is not consistent with the beliefs of the Catholic Church.”
Those guys submitted to the “discipline” of the Church. This guy didn’t. It’s all about the power of the organization.

Where do the anti-abortion people keep getting fetuses? They always seem to be able to get them for their posters and protests. I wouldn’t know where to get a fetus, and I’ve been heavily involved in pro-choice organizations, including doing clinic defense.
Some hospital staff without ethics have been found to be supplying them in the past (yes, I’m horrified too) either for cash or because they are also rabidly pro-birth. A couple of times the fetus was that of a natural miscarriage, which is effing obscene. These days both the clinics and hospitals are supposed to track the remains so this doesn’t happen, but apparently, it still does.
Mind you, this has been a rare thing all along, but if you have no ethics you might not find doing this to be difficult.
So which was worse, “blasphemy” or disobeying the bishop?

An outspoken supporter of former president Donald Trump, Pavone served on official Trump campaign outreach positions in 2016 and was originally a co-chair of Trump’s 2020 pro-life coalition, as well as an advisory board member of Catholics for Trump. Canon law forbids clerics from having an active role in political parties unless they receive the permission of their bishop.
Pavone also reportedly tweeted that he would hear the confession of a Catholic who votes Democrat, “but we are trained that in the absence of repentance, absolution has to be withheld.”
In response, the Amarillo Diocese issued a statement disavowing Pavone’s comments, saying he used “scandalous words not becoming of a Catholic priest.”
“These postings are not consistent with Catholic Church teachings,” the diocese said in its statement. “Please disregard them and pray for Father Pavone.”
Disobeying the bishop has always been a bigger crime in the Catholic church than the greatest worldly atrocities.
Yeah, it calls to mind a lot of situations in moderating this board: Some poster will do something objectionable, but without a clear, specific violation of any of the board rules. A mod steps in and gives them a mod note telling them not to do that, and they keep on doing it. And then they get a Warning for violating mod instructions.
This article makes it clear that disobedience was the major reason he was laicized.
It’s interesting that defrock, a word used in no other context, has an almost exact synonym laicize that is also used in no other context.
