NOBODY knows what is going to happen when people start firing guns at each other, but it ain’t gonna be pretty and (news reports are still spotty here) wasn’t everyone in the classroom killed (that’s what the radio was saying that I had the thought I posted above)? If 1 survives, isn’t that better? 5? 10?

there were eye-witness reports from people who survived in the classroom, so not EVERYBODY died.
There were definitely survivors from that classroom - the shooter came back after leaving the room, but some of them blocked the door and prevented him from returning. Don’t you need to be 21 to have a gun? Other than the professor, who I think was shot first, we don’t even know if anyone in the room would have been eligible. It’s a legitimate debate, but the thread was hardly the place for it.

The news hasn’t said what type of gun the shooter used, but I assume it was a rifle, and that he was shooting from cover. Would a concealed pistol have been any help at all?

Because I can guarantee you that whatever scenario you concoct to take on a person with a gun while unarmed yourself will be unlikely, far fetched, improbably and far, far likelier to end with your death than subduing the gunman. It’s not impossible, no, neither is surviving when the plane you’re flying in blows up in midair, but it’s unlikely, and I’ll guarantee you that whatever the scenario you do come up with, your odds of surviving will greatly increase if you do possess a weapon.
Last news report I saw stated that the gunman might have had a bulletproof vest on as well, making it that much harder for him to be taken down be it by a cop or a private citizen with a CCW permit.

doesn’t sound like he was shooting from cover, either. At any rate, without a gun, rushing a gunmen doesn’t seem like a particularly good tactic. I’d probably try it anyways if I figured I would get shot anyways (say if I was near the door a shooter came in from).
I haven’t been able to find out what he shooting. If it was a 9mm, then it probably was a handgun, though, so he was probably pretty up close and personal.
