Cayce and Psoriasis

SDSTAFF David:

Wow. Yet another David with psoriasis.

I’ve done a bunch of writing myself about the Cayce/psoriasis mess. Dr. John O. A. Pagano, a chiropractor, is busily selling a book about a diet which supposedly ‘cures’ a person of psoriasis. His inspiration was Cayce. He’s done no testing, of course, and seems to believe that if it works for some, it must work for everyone.

The Meridian Institute (which apparently is driven to prove Cayce correct) also has a large amount of information on the supposed ‘connection’ between psoriasis and “leaky gut syndrome.” This information is, of course, based on selective reading of medical journals (some percentage of psoriatics do have higher intestinal permeability, after all), along with ‘unbiased’ reading of not-so-scientific alternative-medicine literature.

While it’s possible that increased intestinal permeability could allow some antigen into the system enough to provoke the immune reaction we know as psoriasis, most Pagano or Cayce supporters don’t see it that way. Most seem to think that the ‘toxins’ our guts allow into our bodies head straight to the skin to be expelled from the body, as if there were no other route out. These ‘toxins’ apparently magically avoid all the rest of our organs, too (except maybe our joints, in cases of psoriatic arthritis). They’re also never identified, but the ‘toxin’ theory goes hand-in-hand with the mistaken idea that psoriasis is more prevalent now than ever before in history (and since we’re all exposed to more toxins now than ever before…).

Of course, if they thought the antigen theory really answered the question as to ‘triggers’, they wouldn’t fixate so much on the gut as the entryway. There are other ways for foreign proteins to enter the body.

Another problem is the question of cause and effect. Does increased intestinal permeability cause psoriasis, or does psoriasis cause IIP? Both? Neither? Nobody knows for sure, right now - except those who support Cayce’s “readings” about psoriasis (at least one of which offers a description which sounds more like acne) think that they do know for sure.

I could go on and on. Hope your psoriasis is in remission right now.

A link to the Staff Report is appreciated. What’s the scoop on Edgar Cayce, the “Sleeping Prophet”?

Sorry, sorry. Too wrapped up in ranting. I’m usually quite good at this, really.
