Continuing the discussion from The ICE shooting in Minneapolis (1/7/2026):
Portland police said at a 2:24 p.m., they had learned that a man who had been shot called to request help near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Arriving officers found a man and a woman wounded from apparent gunshot wounds. Police confirmed federal agents were involved.
Short on details for the moment.
I’m going to hold off on commenting until there’s some real info available. I’m not sure why CBP, not ICE, would be conducting operations in Portland.
I believe the jurisdiction of the “Border” Patrol extends to anywhere within 100 miles of the border, and the Pacific coast counts as a border. Could be mistaken on the details, but they definitely wander further afield than you’d expect.
Portland is a port of entry for the US, technically. They were operating in Charlotte, NC until November, for crying out loud. They find excuses.
True, there’s an international airport, so there must be at least some Customs personnel stationed there.

Locate a Port of Entry in Oregon
Astoria, Coos Bay, Hillsboro, Newport, and Portland. And I’d imagine they can cast a pretty wide net and tie it back to one of those locations when asked to do so.

Border Patrol dickbag Bongino was the dude, always with a camera pointing at him, who was in charge of and participated in the tossing of tear gas in Chicago neighborhoods.
Chicago had dudes in cowboy hats and carrying weapons “patrol” State street downtown.
Yup. Again, the news is really confusing right now. The shooting supposedly happened in (near?) a hospital parking lot, and the two victims called police for help 4 minutes later almost 3 miles away from the shooting location. Some reports are giving the shooting location as the intersection of two streets that don’t intersect.
I have a shitload of questions right now, but I don’t expect any answers for a while.
A big fear is that this is all just a giant powder keg, and shit will go down no matter what. I don’t think protesters are going to see much distinction between ICE and CBP (and not that they should, as they’re both part of Homeland Security and under the command of Kristi fucking Noem).
ICE and CBP have duties that overlap a lot. They even both have “customs” in their name. While they aren’t interchangeable agencies, the current administration seems to be using them to do the same job in different places, so I’m not sure how important the distinction is between them aside from jurisdiction.

Yeah, Homeland Security is operating like all federal employees are interchangeable. Re-entering the US during the government shutdown I was (pleasantly) processed by a military MP rather than a usual surly border agent goon.
Federal officials are saying the victims “weaponized their vehicle”, so it’s sounding a bit like Minneapolis. No videos have come out yet, which means we might be stuck with whatever story the feds want to tell.
Nobody died, there will be 2 sides to this.
