CBS News has learned of a threat to attack the U.S. Capitol on the same day Congress is set to count Electoral College votes. The threat cited Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by the U.S. last year. Jeff Pegues has the exclusive report.
The literal directions for this are in the Tom Clancy novel “Debt of Honor”. However, since that book was published I believe there have been some improvements to the security infrastructure to prevent the weaponization of airliners.
Why would Iran avenge Soleimani by attacking the Capitol when that building is hosting the vote-certifying ceremony to vote out the very president who killed Soleimani?
Because Iran (or whoever actually made the threat) doesn’t care that much about which specific American President ordered the assassination? Iran and the U.S. have been engaged in a low-intensity conflict that occasionally flares up into quasi-warfare since 1979, through seven U.S. Presidential administrations. A lot of Americans think of Iran as a monolithic hostile foreign power, and a lot of Iranians think of the U.S. in the same way.
Yeah, nothing in that message to indicate the Iranian government was actually behind this; for all we know, it’s just some crank trying to unnerve people.
The Iranian government is interested in self-survival; they aren’t going to be so utterly stupid as to actually try something like this.
Yeah, I’m with @LSLGuy. Some Trumplican nutcase who thinks that if a terroristic threat means they can’t meet to count the electoral votes, somehow CFSG gets to stay president. If it were an actual terrorist, why on earth would they announce their intentions?
By definition, whoever made the threat is an actual terrorist.
Besides that, bomb threats are taken seriously precisely because “actual terrorists” often do announce their intentions. It’s part of that whole “cause terror” thing.
I personally don’t think there’s nearly enough information on this particular incident yet for any speculation about who and why to be more than a wild guess.
You can bet the FAA implemented a TFR over Washington, DC, and the immediate area for Wednesday. Then there will be the military overflights on patrol.
There is ALWAYS a TFR in effect over Washington. It’s a permanent TFR no-fly zone, except for authorized military aircraft. They may well take additional precautions as well for the occasion.
