CCleaner - anyone figured out why they keep updating it?

3 updates in month. For a program that clears your cache and temp folder. WTH are they dicking around with? It seems like they manage to update this program at least 4 or 5 times a year. The recent 3 updates is an all time high.

Its not rocket science to clear the cache. Certain file extensions get deleted. Theres an exceptions list for cookies that the User sets up. For example the SDMB cookie is an exception. I don’t want deleted. Otherwise I’d have to log in daily.

Anyone investigated what they are changing so often?

I just updated again. Been less than a week. A major PITA when you own three computers.

I seem to recall you asking this before.
Here is the Version History

I use the free version on a old computer, so maybe there are more changes to the Pro Version with it extra features and to keep up with changes to the various browsers.

Not sure if I asked this before or not. I know I haven’t recently. It’s a pet peeve of mine.

Didn’t think to check the version history. Yeah, I see the three updates since the end of Jan. Been a real nuisance. I often let it bitch and nag me a week or two before applying the update. By then another one is right around the corner. I had all three home PC’s up to date last week and now here comes another update. PITA

Looks like they’ve been updating Chrome and Opera cleaning. I don’t use either. Adding Win 10 support. don’t use that either.

Programmers these days are always dicking around with programs. Our shop was just the opposite. We had payroll programs that hadn’t been compiled in six years. Just the way the Analysts wanted it. No changes meant no 2 AM phone calls because production payroll aborted. If it ain’t broke don’t fuck with it.

They kept us busy enough writing State and Federal reports. Reports for our insurance vendors. Updating tax tables and so on.

Hummm
Popup on lower right, check.

Click ‘ok’. ( 2 seconds )

Go about what I was doing.

Loads fine in background.

I never use it on from start menu, only manual.

First time I start it, I check the boxes. (15 seconds ) Unless I have a bazillion special commands needing input. ( Have not looked lately, do not the previous selection remain??? )

Those I have stored on the desktop to just C&P in. Another30 seconds. If am using any…

And this is too much even if once a week?? But usually not that much…

I am easy to piss off but not that easy…

YMMV

I guess I’m grouchy today. As I said, I finally got all three pc’s updated last week. Then just like diarrhea here comes another pop up update this morning.

It’s not just CCcleaner. It’s all the fucking bullshit we’re expected to update. Adobe Reader, Flash, Firefox, the list just goes on and on. I get so damn sick of it. I’m sick of pc’s and technology in general. Constantly changing, constantly updating. I’m sick of fooling with it. I’ve been on this stinking treadmill since 1985. It just gets worse every year.

Believe it or not. There was a time we could actually use a PC in peace. Updates were rare. Turn on the pc and get your work done.

October 2013

CCleaner doesn’t know that.

Given the nature of CCleaner, they have to dick around to keep up with the different browser & OS.

How effective is this feature? I’m thinking of installing something like CCleaner, and I’d like to find something for which it’s fairly easy to pick and choose the cookies.

very easy.

  1. run ccleaner and clear off everything

  2. surf to the sites where you want to save cookies (you’ll have to log in again)

click Options, Cookies
3. cccleaner will show a list of cookies on your pc. look for ones with obvious names like boards.straightdope.com, login.yahoo.com, www.yahoo.com, mail.yahoo.com, groups.yahoo etc.
4. click each one you want to save and click the right arrow to move it into the exceptions list. Yahoo especially has several you need to save to avoid having to log back in.

you could skip step 1. But, you could have hundreds of entries if you haven’t cleared cookies before. The down side is you have to log in again.
I find it’s easier dealing with a short list. YMMV You’ll be surprised how many crap cookies you’ll get just opening the browser and going to the straight dope message board.

Basically you only have to save cookies for sites where you login. Hotmail, yahoo, gmail, straight dope etc.

I think gmail forces a login each time. regardless of saving the cookie. I haven’t tried it in awhile. Right now I don’t have an exception for gmail’s cookie in my CCcleaner. I have gmail at work and a personal gmail account. I **want **the cookie deleted. So I can log in to one or the other. (can’t log in to both at the same time).

But how will you know all those applications are new and shiny and up-to-date if there isn’t a constant stream of updates? They have to have an answer for other applications that are busy updating. And they’ll have to lay off people if they’re not busing writing updates.

Are you against full employment??

I realize new technology generates jobs. Everybody needs a job and the tech field is a good career.

I’ve been burned out for awhile. Nearly thirty years of this tech stuff. But thats just me. The rest of the world can’t wait until the next IPhone is released. Or the next tablet. Or the next higher speed connection. There’s always something newer, better and faster coming out tomorrow. The economy depends on it.

There was a time that I felt the same way. I lived and breathed the latest tech. I just need a break for awhile and I’ll be ready to jump back in. I hope to spend six weeks backpacking this summer. Get away from all this stuff and just relax. I’ll carry a phone and a PLB in case of emergency. Thats it for technology.
