CD Burner speed

I’ll explain very simply:
Dual boot b/t 98 and W2K and use same burner, proper drivers, and same Nero software. In 98, I can burn at the max speed which is 40x, HOWEVER!!! in W2K, i can only burn at 16x.

What gives?

It might be worthwhile to do a test with the standalone Nero speed reporting utility here

What version is your Nero software?

Little clarification? Are you saying that the 20x through 40x options are unavailable when using Nero in Windows 2000, or are you saying that you can select 40x, but it will only burn at 16x?

If it’s the latter, did you make sure DMA is enabled on the drive? Go to the Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then right click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel, depending on where your device is located. Select Properties from the menu and click on the Advanced Settings tab. Make sure the Current Transfer Mode says Ultra DMA Mode.

Clarification: The highest option available in the drop down box is 16x (40x in W98). The IDE ATA. . . Current transfer mode is set to “PIO Mode” and I can’t change it. I can change the regular Transfer Mode b/t “PIO Only” and “DMA if available”. But that is all I can do with that.

I ran the tests that come with Nero 5.5.7.2 and the speed coming back to me is still WAY lower than my Win98 speeds.

This just in. I went to 98, checked the drivers and it said there were no drivers associated with the device (even though it works beautifully), W2K is using 3 drivers for it, it works, but not as well as 98. So would it be smart to uninstall the drivers?

Not really, Win 2000 and Win 98 are two very different animals codewise what’s good for one is not necessairly good for the other. Win 2000 is not noted for being all that friendly with multi-media devices. Why not update 2000 to XP?

I have XP on the computer downstairs and I’m not thrilled with it. Too many errors with games and internet surfing. And i’m about to be an MCSE-in-training and thought I might get a head start with W2K anyway

I guess I’ll just live with it’s handicapped recording speed for now–or use win98.

What is the Motherboard ??? Mobo IDE Controllers are notorious for UDMA problems under W2K. Check the latest IDE Controller Drivers from your Mobo Vendor (You may need a BIOS update too).
