CD Key Retrieval

I installed Diablo II and its expansion on a family member’s computer a few months back. It played pretty slow, so I never got to play it much, and then moved in with friends and played on their computers.

Fast forward to now - I just upgraded to a much better system, and while I can find all my Diablo II CD’s and manuals, I switched the cases around and can’t find the CD key anymore. It’s still installed on the other computer.

Is there any way to retrieve the CD Key from the install? I wants me some Diablo and I don’t want to shell out for a new CD.

Any ideas much appreciated!

In many Windows applications, if you click Help > About… it displays the CD Key which was entered at the time of the installation. You can also try perusing the (old) system’s Registry to see if it was stored there.

I’m headed over there now, so I’ll give that a try.

This may sound like a dumb question, but how do I look through the system registry?

Start button > Run > enter “regedit”. In the Registry Editor, click Edit > Find, and enter your search terms. Try “Diablo”, for example, or maybe the software company’s name.

If you’re not used to working in the Registry (sounds like you aren’t), then be very careful not to change anything! You can really mess up the computer by accidentally changing things in the Registry. Check carefully as you exit to make sure you aren’t saving any changes.

I’ll post a couple of links, but some may be broken since the game is a bit old (I still play though… ).

Good luck, and careful asking for this kind of info at any of the actual D2 forums like PlanetDiablo forums, or Dii.net, etc. They view this, along with character editors, bots, and maphacks, as cheating. Whatever.
