CDC recommends spring COVID booster for people 65 and up

The spring booster will be an additional shot of the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Novavax. The booster dose should be taken after at least four months have passed since a previous COVID-19 vaccination.

I wonder how many people will get it: the vaccination rate keeps going down.

I was just wondering when it was time for my next jab, thanks for the post.

I am super good at getting my jabs because nobody out here in redneck Arizona bothers and everyone keeps getting sick. But me. And hubs, but that’s only because I force him to do it.

And kittens!

I need to go check my vax card for the last date, then I’ll zip right out to get the next jab ASAP. I seldom go out, mostly to the store, library, etc.; I live in a reasonably well-vaxed area; I mask up inside any public space; but I haven’t caught the dread disease yet and, being elderly and with various issues, I damn sure don’t intend to if at all possible.

I got my 2 Modernas in spring of 2020. I have no intention of getting any more.

I wonder if that is why you keep getting sick?

This is the first cold or sickness I’ve had in years.
Actually, after my second shot I got fatigue, which I had never had before.

My last one was in September 2023, I think. So it’s vax time again.

I did catch the virus in December 2023; I wonder if they’ll say I have to hold off because of that.

I just got both my COVID and RSV vaccines at the end of November. Is this something different than what was available back then? I’ll have to wait until the end of March before I can get another one, assuming I need another one. I’ll ask my PCP about it. I’m over 65 if that matters.

Nope, the vaccines have not been updated since the fall

Does that mean one more dose of whatever you had before, or does the new shot include all three? It’s an odd phrasing either way, but I suppose that if the three target slightly different proteins, it might be more effective than any of them separately?

Probably, you won’t be made to wait. The CDC has recommended shots closer than any other national health authority. But you might want to wait up to 6 months. You surely want to wait at least 3 months, but it’ll probably take that long before it’s officially available?

I don’t think so. I think they are recommending that older people get a booster of the same thing.

I’m not quite 65, so i won’t be eligible. But i might not have chosen to take it up anyway, because my reaction to the last few doses has been very strong, which both makes the shot less attractive, and also is correlated with having a strong immune response already. But i plan to get another dose next fall.

They all target the same protein. They are saying that the three that were approved in the fall will all be available in the spring for older folks (and the immune compromised.)

I found something specific re timing

The recommendation applies only to those 65 and older. The additional dose should be given at least four months after a previous dose for healthy older adults, or at least three months after a coronavirus infection. It’s unclear whether those getting a second shot now will also need another shot for the 2024-2025 fall and winter season.

I just re-read the article and since it’s the same vaccine as the one released last Fall this is just to reinforce that protection until the 2024-2025 version is released, presumable in the Fall again. I have to wait four months from when I got the vaccine last Fall so I should be eligible in April to get the booster and that should protect me until the new one is released.

I apologize, my post was a bit rude. I must’ve been channeling maganut…will ask my dr. What shot I should get.

Hmm. Coming up on 6 months for me since the last boost of what was the latest and greatest then. Which the concensus here seems to say is what’s still on offer now.

I’m over 65 with a chronic health complicator, so I’m in their target demographic for another jab here soon. Which timing would also dovetail nicely with 6 months remaining until the expected Fall 2024 release of a newer update.

I just checked, and I had the original 2-shot course when it first came out plus now 3 boosters of various flavors and manufacturers. And one mild COVID infection of unknown strain during the days of mild Omicron being the predominant strain.

Color me very satisfied with how the vaccines and the disease itself have been working for me.

I know that’s not the case for everyone.

You probably meant spring of 2021. The Moderna vaccine didn’t get its EUA until 12/18/20.

I’ll likely be looking at a booster in spring, especially if we’re planning on traveling anywhere that time of year.

Yes, thats right.

This week I got a text from CVS about scheduling another covid shot, apparently based on this CDC notice. I had gotten a covid booster in October, along with my regular flu shot, at CVS. I’m over 65 and do have some health issues. In January my doctor mentioned that in April I am due for my 10-year Tetanus booster. From what I’ve read in this thread I’m still a bit confused about whether I need to get (yet another) Covid booster.

If it’s easy to ask you doctor, do that. Otherwise, if you haven’t had overly unpleasant reactions to prior covid shots, you should probably book one for the spring.

All I had had were the 2 modernas and since I finally got covid last week, I plan to get a booster.
