However, for the undated columns you can get a rough idea of when the column appeared based on the book in which they were reprinted. For example, in the above URL the “a1_209” means the column appears on page 209 of the original The Straight Dope, which was first published in 1984. The other volumes are:
a2 = More of the Straight Dope (1988)
a3 = Return of the Straight Dope (1994)
a4 = The Straight Dope Tells All (1998)
a5 = Triumph of the Straight Dope (1999)
I have gone on record as predicting that a6 will be called The Straight Dope Goes to Hawaii.
The text of http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_358.html mentions 1979, and the column appears in More of the Straight Dope, so that narrows it to 1979-1988. I would guess the early 1980s.
Columns first posted online in our AOL days do not have dates. These are mostly from books 1 and 2 (the a1-… and a2-… columns). As we cycle through classic columns we are adding dates as well as Slug’s illustrations. At the present rate we’ll be finished in five or ten years. We think in terms of the long haul around here.
<< BTW, does this really belong in the Pit? I had a comment on Cecil’s columns, although not a specific one. >>
Yeah, I saw it and left it where it was, in Comments on Cecil’s Columns. But I’m not going to get into a tug-of-war with Czarcasm over it… even though I’m older than he is and so know better.
BTW, one of the things I loved about the last two books were the excerpts from the SDMB. Doing that again would be great, although it would be a monumental task to find the best of it. Opal might be able to help, what with the Page O’ Flames, etc.
