Cecil, you putz!

No column to link to here, just a comment on Cecil’s columns.

First, why is there no date indicated on most of the older columns. Afraid of dating yourself, freak?

Many of your columns are just wrong now. How about some updates? You can’t be that busy with doing one column a week.

If you would like some help with identifying the columns that need updates, just email me and I’ll provide my salary requirements.

Yours very truly,

Since this is a comment on Cecil and not a particular column, I’m moving this to the BBQ Pit.

BTW, the date that is listed directly below the title of the column is the original date of the column.

Hey just being a bit of a smart aleck.

But can you tell me where the date on this column is?

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_358.html

I just found this from the first page of CCC, but I often come across this.

BTW, does this really belong in the Pit? I had a comment on Cecil’s columns, although not a specific one.

Some of the older columns don’t have a date listed, for example, http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_209.html .

However, for the undated columns you can get a rough idea of when the column appeared based on the book in which they were reprinted. For example, in the above URL the “a1_209” means the column appears on page 209 of the original The Straight Dope, which was first published in 1984. The other volumes are:

a2 = More of the Straight Dope (1988)
a3 = Return of the Straight Dope (1994)
a4 = The Straight Dope Tells All (1998)
a5 = Triumph of the Straight Dope (1999)

I have gone on record as predicting that a6 will be called The Straight Dope Goes to Hawaii.

The text of http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_358.html mentions 1979, and the column appears in More of the Straight Dope, so that narrows it to 1979-1988. I would guess the early 1980s.

Columns first posted online in our AOL days do not have dates. These are mostly from books 1 and 2 (the a1-… and a2-… columns). As we cycle through classic columns we are adding dates as well as Slug’s illustrations. At the present rate we’ll be finished in five or ten years. We think in terms of the long haul around here.

I think it will be Straight Dope A Go-Go.

Yeah, I saw it and left it where it was, in Comments on Cecil’s Columns. But I’m not going to get into a tug-of-war with Czarcasm over it… even though I’m older than he is and so know better.

BTW, one of the things I loved about the last two books were the excerpts from the SDMB. Doing that again would be great, although it would be a monumental task to find the best of it. Opal might be able to help, what with the Page O’ Flames, etc.

Wimp! :stuck_out_tongue:

Speaking of which, it’s been a long, long time since there’s been a new book. Almost 4 years. So when’s the next one due, huh?

I want my new Porta-Cecil!!

As long as we’re tossing out suggested names for Cecil’s next tome, may I suggest: That Damn Fool Dope.
