Celebrities you were surprised to find out were straight

Maybe no one knows, maybe no one cares, but I will ask again: anybody have the Dope on Barry Manilow?

I know he has been a gay culture figure for years (he played a lot of gay clubs when he was starting out) but I thought that I read that he has been married (to a woman) for many years, and that while he has a large gay fanbase, he is totally hetro.

Am I thinking of someone else, or is Barry Manilow indeed straight?

Dude. Who turns down a gymnast?

On the other hand, I have an uncle who was a pilot for many years, and he says Randall was a regular on his flights to Fire Island.

He may have gone both ways.

I suspect Cesar Milan will be the Raymond Burr of this thread.

I.e., to Fire Island and back again . . .

Much less her

Raow!

Chances are the feather would be from one of his costumes.

And I think you meant “giiiirrrrrlfriend!”

Years ago he did an episode of MTV Cribs and spoke in a lot of “we” and “us” terms, particularly when speaking about the bedroom of his tiny tiny NY apartment, in the presence of his female business partner from the restaurant he co-owned at the time, TeaNY.

Johnny Weir already has one of those: Tanith Belbin, his Olympic Village roommate, with their pink everything and Lady Gaga posters in their room.

Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, who’s been married since 1980.

You must be thinking of someone else. He married his high school sweetheart in 1964, but they separated in 1965, and the marriage was annulled in January 1966. He has never remarried.

No inside dope, but some very strong suspicions.

I’ve read his biography (the wife is a big fan) and been to one of his concerts. Everything about the man screams “closeted gay” (see also: Cliff Richard). The way he talks about his marriage reads like a man who married a good friend, confusing it for love, and trying to be straight when he wasn’t. Or maybe he just didn’t want to talk about it. But it was odd.

And at the concert there was this one male dancer…The guy wasn’t a terribly good dancer and actually had a bit of a pot belly, and yet Barry kept putting him front and center. There were also some rather telling glances between the two. I may not have gaydar but if Barry wasn’t boinking the guy then I don’t understand what the hell he was doing on stage.

It actually probably helps that I’m not a huge Manilow fan, although I think he’s talented. It means that instead of jumping up and down and screaming like the rest of the (predominantly middle-aged female) audience I was paying attention.

Still could be wrong though.

Maybe his wife’s name, Ilusion, is a clue?!

A friend of mine in the NYC theater scene swears that it’s common knowledge that Matthew Broderick is gay and he and Sarah Jessica Parker have a sham marriage. Not sure I buy it, though he could most definitely be bi.

I had assumed that Carrot Top was gay until some years back when he did a show at my college and someone on the school’s programming committee told me that he was a real pussy hound (and apparently a bit of a douche also).

I was watching Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern yesterday when he mentioned his wife. His what?

The only shock for me is that anybody would think the dog whisperer is gay.
I’m a straight female who has never had any fag-hag tendencies whatsoever, and I think Cesar Milan is HOT! Oozing with maleness, in fact. To use the crude vernacular, I would totally hit that.

His wife has been shown on some episodes. She is attractive, and their relationship seems real.

PS - I watch his show several times a week, and it has actually helped us a lot with our dogs’ behavior.

Wow, this actually may take the prize for the most ridiculous post I have ever read on the SD boards.

Why wouldn’t straight people have gaydar?
By your logic they must at least have “straight-dar”. In which case they would notice when someone so completely does NOT ping their “straight-dar”, so that works as gaydar after all.

We are all sexual beings, and our response to people is colored by whether they are in our “target market”. Very few people can hide this.
This is NOT just little things like “a mannerism or speech pattern here or there” - this is one of the biggest components of the human psyche.

I am a (straight) female. Gay guys respond to me VERY differently from straight guys. Even the straight guys who are not attracted to me show it in ways that gay guys don’t. That’s the human animal in us.

I think the real reason people can be wrong about celebrities is not because the observer is straight, but because they are not meeting the celeb in real life. When you meet someone in real life, your gay-dar will work better. Because, again, it’s an animal thing.

Straight doesn’t mean brain-dead or asexual.
