I have met Captain Kangeroo, Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Ron Howard, Jerry (whatever) from Leave It To Beaver and I think that is all. Who have you met? Do tell where you met them too.
I met Cheryl Ladd when she was in Kentucky filming a made-for-TV movie called Bluegrass. I took her photograph, too (for a local newspaper).
I met Tommy Smothers when he recorded the narration for a documentary I wrote, The William T. Young Story. He’s very nice!
I also met Ashley Judd when she appeared in The Ryan Interview here, a project I didn’t personally work on. She is a Kentucky native and comes home often to attend University of Kentucky basketball games!
I also met Rosie Perez when she was here for American Shorts: Poof!, which will air nationally. (Watch your PBS listings! )
Minor celebrity: Bob Edwards of National Public Radio recorded the narration for a baseketball in Kentucky documentary we did, and so I met him when he was here too. How fun it was to tell him I’ve woken up to the sound of his voice for most of my adult life!
I don’t meet many celebrities through work, but it’s a lot of fun when I do!
I sat next to Vic Morrow on a flight from NY to LA. He was nice and signed an autograph. My Dad was the one who pointed him out at the gate.
Three weeks later he was beheaded filming “The Twilight Zone” movie.
I met Hillary Clinton when I was in Washington D.C. once. She just shook my hand quickly.
I met Duncan Sheik three times this year at his shows. He’s a really nice guy and he posed for a picture with me and autographs. He recognized my husband once too.
The last celeb I met was the guy who played Leroy(Leon) on Fame. I worked at the food court in a mall. He wasn’t very nice at all.
Mostly musical:
All of Van Halen (Hagar-era)
Metallica (except for Lars Ulrich)
Both of those were backstage in Carbondale, IL.
I had an interesting conversation with Ted Nugent backstage at Riverport Ampitheatre in St. Louis, something about big guitars and small women or something like that.
I’ve also met several pro baseball players around town and at the stadium.
George H.W. Bush
Bill Clinton
William F. Buckley, Jr.
P.J. O’Rourke
Ernest Borgnine
Alex Trebek
Ran into Will Smith while staying at a hotel in Maui. Exchanged some token greetings, asked how he was doing, he asked how I was doing… nice chap.
A few years later, at the same hotel, had a similar exchange with Jason Alexander. He was in the pool, keeping an eye on his kid, and there were a few pleasantries tossed back and forth.
Served Richard Dean Anderson some popcorn at a movie theatre that I worked at, years ago. Man, that guy is somber.
I met Vincent Price when he was doing a one-man show at my college as Oscar Wilde.
I met Daniel Berrigan also at my college & defended US nukes in a small group discussion with him (He was very gracious & personable- I was right then & I’m right now, but God bless his soul.)
My brother sat next to Debra Messing on his flight home to Indiana from L.A. right after she did Ned & Stacey. He said she was very sweet & friendly & then if I recall correctly, she dozed for the flight home (her family was in Ohio). If my brother also dozed then he could truthfully claim to have slept with Debra Messing… YEAH!
I came out of an elevator the same time Bob Hope was getting in and I said “Whoa, hi there.” Does that count?
Rory Calhoun. Eat your hearts out.
Kevin Smith, filmmaker and writer of movie scripts and comic books, also known as “Silent Bob”
The late Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees
Max Weinberg, Conan O’Brien’s Late Night bandleader and drummer of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band
Pat Metheny, jazz guitarist
Less Than Jake and The Pietasters, ska-punk bands
Lavay Smith, sexy swing and blues singer
Vince DiCola, did the musical scores for the Transformers: The Movie and Rocky IV soundtracks
Golddust (Dustin Runnels), a wrestler from the WWE (formerly WWF)
Jimmy Hart, another professional wrestling personality
I’ve also met several comic book creators: writers and artists who are well-known in their field, but not exactly household names. Some of the guys I’ve met who might be recognizable are Stan Lee (co-creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, and Daredevil), Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn), Joe Quesada (editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics), and Rob Liefeld (a popular artist from the early '90s who had a Levi’s jean shorts commercial).
Ok probably not relevant to Americans but while I was doing my compulsory Kiwi-working-in-London-pub stint I served Mr Skippy (ranger from skippy), Jacko from Brushstrokes, Joey from Bread, Robert Powell, Arthur and Terry from Minder (they filmed an episode outside the pub…way exciting) and best of all John Inman was a regular. Oddly he always wore the same pink cardy.
An Aussie I worked with made Kangaroo noises at Mr Skippy the first time he served him then ran out the back blushing with shame. Poor boy was just over excited
Oh I forgot…I met Lavay Smith you know (Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers Fame)
We spoke in the bathroom (I followed her in <g>)
She said she took “Lavay” from her Grandmother and that is how she came up with her name. She was very nice.
My mother took me to a Dark Shadows convention when I was a kid. While those probably don’t count as celebrities, they’ve all been on tv, and I met a whole bunch of them.
I met Rosie O’Donnell when she was in Grease on Broadway a bunch of years ago. I shook her hand is all.
Many people that I’ve known seemed to have interesting connections to Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, all in the mid to late 90’s. Except me. Although I never did get any connections like that, I did get to meet the entire band for a tenth of a second in '99 when they appeared at HMV in Manhattan for the release of There Is Nothing Left To Lose. I got all their autographs. Guitarist Chris Shifflett signed my cd “Marty Flufkin” and I’ve never known why. My husband’s first name is Marty and so I call him “marty flufkin” as a joke.
My most interesting story, though:
Years ago I went to my cousin’s big party and realized that an old lady looked vaguely familiar. I heard someone call her “Rosetta” and then realized that she was Rosetta LeNoire, the grandmother on Family Matters! It turns out she was really good friends with my cousins’ family and used to babysit them when they were little and stuff. Because she was so old, they’d fly her out to LA to do her scenes all at once and then she’d spend the rest of the time in NY. She was a really, really kind and sweet woman! Totally stole my cousin’s party though, everyone wanted to hear Urkel stories, hahaha! Unfortunately she has since then passed away. : ( That is a shame.
Lavay was very nice when I met her at the autograph session during the intermission at her concert in March. She even posed for a picture with me:
And not that I met her, but when living above a pub in Trafalgar Square (opposite the National portrait gallery) I opened the bedroom curtains one morning to see the Queen opening an exhibition…I really hope she has better security now then she did in the mid 80’s.
It was an obscure reference to the movie This Is Spinal Tap, where Paul Shaffer played a minor character named “Artie Fufkin” who appeared at the titular band’s autograph-signing event.
