Hardly any.
Lance Armstrong and Steph Curry. I’ve also met Aaron Oberhoser, but unless you’re into golf you’d have no idea who he is.
Oh, wait. Andy Grove and Gordon Moore. Christie Hefner. I’m sure a few other Silicon Valley notables. Years ago I saw Jane Goodall in the Tokyo airport and went up and introduced myself to tell how much I admired her work.
I was at a party once with Stephen Hawking-- He’s probably the most famous on my list. But there were enough other people crowding around him that I figured it’d be impolite to join them.
Slightly less famous, that party (and another one I attended) was hosted by Kip Thorne (who will probably win the Nobel Prize this year). But he was so busy being the host that I don’t think anyone got to talk to him much.
I got an autograph from Tommy Makem after a local concert, and we chatted with him for a couple of minutes. I lost the autograph long ago, though.
I also have an autograph that I know where it is from David Griffith, and was part of a group that talked with him for about two hours. But while every physics major will recognize that name, very few non-physicists will.
Vincent Price. That is all, unless you count politicians, which I don’t.
Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, and John deLancie at Star Trek conventions. Jane Goodall and Diana Gabaldon at book signings. Senator Bill Bradley, who was somehow tied up in a startup I worked for.
I’ve seen many others in person, but those are the ones I’ve exchanged words with.
Alton Brown. David Sedaris. James Watson. Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton (he is a lot bigger than you would expect or at least he was in the early 90’s)
Tipper Gore
David Copperfield (he was on a flight with me once and I peed next to him in the men’s room).
Christiaan Barnard (1st surgeon to perform a successful heart transplant)
Delta Burke
Anne Rice
John Goodman (lived down the street from me in New Orleans)
Little Richard
I ran into Nina Hartley (a huge 1980’s porn star) at the airport counter at the tiny Lebanon, NH airport. I was putting my grandmother and young female cousin on a plane back home at the time and it took some explaining to say who she was and why she was famous. She was there to give a talk on women’s issues in the porn industry at Dartmouth I later found out. Luckily my grandmother was not a prude and had a decent collection of porn videos herself as I found out a few years later.
Ray Bradbury
Eric Idle, Michael Palin & Terry Jones (separately, at bookstore appearances)
Robert Fripp
Ian Anderson
Jon Anderson
Grace Slick
John Mayall
Ian Anderson? John Mayall? Grace Slick!
…may I post next to you?
James Doohan yelled at me to get out of a Handicapped parking space.
John Savage asked me for directions.
Met Robert Blake when he was on trial.
Spoke on the phone with Jamie Farr (super nice guy!)
Met Nomar Garciaparra at Logan Airport.
Stood, tongue-tied, in front of Magic Johnson (he’s HUGE)
Played racquetball against Michael Biehn (he’s pretty good! I suck)
I’ve met quite a few famous or semi-famous people the most well known
Prince. I was allowed to approach His Royal Badness and say hello
Dr. J my most cherished, because he spoke to me first and because I hate the Lakers I got to gush about him posterizing Coop
OJ before his troubles. Really cool guy. Never woulda thought.
Sugar Shane Mosley
Evander Holyfield
Dawnn Lewis
Kiki Shepard
Joe Theismann
Adam Hughes
Chuck Austen
Talked on the phone to Harlan Ellison.
Interviewed Ramsay Campbell (via Skype)
Had dinner with David Weber
Drove Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and David Drake to the airport.
Was on a panel with Michael O’Hare. He was pretty quiet, but later I learned it was when his paranoia was at his height.
There are many other science fiction authors that I’ve met at various conventions.
Talked to Stephen King for about 20 minutes back in 1979.
Waited on NBA players Dale Ellis and Derek Harper, and made them angry. Also waited on Mark Aguirre and some other Mavericks.
Sold a doughnut to Leeza Gibbons.
Talked to Cowboys’ linebacker Lee Roy Jordan while he flirted with my mom.
Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine bought me a copy of his book.
Nobel Prize winner Steve Weinberg thanked me for holding the elevator for him.
Most of these were at book signings and at sci-fi conventions, though I’ve met a few celebrities who came in to our ad agency for meet-and-greets. Also, when you grew up in Green Bay, you had a lot of opportunities to meet Packers (and I met a lot of them), so I only listed a few of the more famous of those.
Alton Brown
Peter Frampton
“Weird Al” Yankovic
Felicia Day
Trace Adkins
Graham Kerr (the “Galloping Gourmet”, and just amazingly awesome)
Peter Mayhew
Carrie Fisher
Ioan Gruffudd
Bart Starr
James Lofton
Jan Stenerud
Franco Harris (he was on my flight a few years ago – to Pittsburgh, in fact)
William Proxmire
Rahm Emanuel
I’ve met Harry Chapin and Janis Ian (twice for the latter). Back in the 1960s, I met Ed Muskie, when he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1968, and I got very close to Ted Kennedy at a campaign stop, but didn’t actually meet him.
I met and talked to Tim Gun at The Met in January. He was nice enough to take a picture with me and my friends. Super nice guy.
Meat Loaf
Katharine Hepburn
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
And a number of other Connecticut celebrities
While I’ve seen a few famous people, in 61 years, I have never personally met or spoken to anyone that one might consider famous.
Oh, wait, I once gave Leon Redbone a ride back to his hotel from a gig in Pittsburgh. Forgot that one.
Only two come to mind.
Bob Gainey (hockey player and coach) under really terrible circumstances.
Randall Munroe (xkcd) at a friend’s birthday party a few years ago, but none of us knew it was him until after he left. We played Cards Against Humanity.
