Celebrity Airport Names? (Snoop Dogg?)

It’s a beauty way to go.

“Okay, so like welcome aboard Great White North Airlines, flight 456 to Toronto Pearson. Hey, like who is it called ‘Pearson’? Who was Pearson?”

“I dunno. Some politician, I guess.”

“Yeah, maybe he was the Prime Rib, eh?”

“Naw, more likely the Prime Minister.”

“Yeah, but Prime Rib sounds better, eh?”

“Okay, so settle back, chairs upright, tray tables stowed, and good day.”

“Eh!”

There is Jimmy Stewart Airport:

Ok, now I want to fly straight outta Compton/Woodley Airport and into NWA, then into EZE, then into DRE, then into REN.

If someone could get the IATA to change Reykjavík’s Keflavík International Airport’s code to ICE, we’d have almost the whole group.

Wiki has a list of airports named after people. A lot of politicians and aviators included.

Liverpool airport is named after John Lennon. I’m surprised that Charles Lindbergh does not appear to have an airport named after him. I guess his politics may have gotten in the way.

They named one after that actor from the Bonzo movie.

Until 2003 San Diego International (SAN) was named Lindbergh Field (the Spirit of St. Louis was built there). Like Burbank, the change was stated to be prompted by a desire to be more descriptive of the destination, but the change did coincide with San Diego’s transition from a white conservative stronghold to a city with a more typically metropolitan political base.

I’m just waiting for airports to realize they can sell naming rights to corporations like stadiums do. I can hardly wait to fly into Frito-Lay International, or maybe Geico World Airport.

Not an entire airport, but one of the terminals at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport is named after Lindbergh (He was raised in Minnesota, apparently).

And, as Denver, like Will Rogers and Wiley Post, died in a plane crash, it might not be the best name for an airport.

Substantially every US Air Force base that’s named after a person is named after someone who died in a plane crash. As is Chicago’s O’Hare.

Toronto International Airport’s code, YYZ, is named after a classic Rush instrumental.

Monterey John Denver Regional Airport has a nice ring to it…

Personally, I think that the Monterey airport really needs to be named for someone named Jack. (Yes, I know, cheesy joke.)

Meanwhile Oakland International Airport is considering changing its name to emphasize the fact that it’s close to San Francisco. Apparently, many people who aren’t from California aren’t aware that Oakland is near San Francisco, and that OAK is a viable alternative to SFO for travel there. In fact OAK is a shorter drive to some parts of San Francisco than SFO, although getting there does require dealing with traffic on the Bay Bridge.

Farmers Field.

I guess Boeing Field is officially named after William Boeing, but it comes pretty close. I would guess that the company that bears his name is more famous than the man himself.

The official name of that airport is King County International Airport. It’s still the Boeing company’s primary testing and shipping hub, so it’s no surprise people continue to call it Boeing Field. I grew up near Orange County Airport and have never referred to it as John Wayne. Nor do most locals I know.

I flew there a couple times, decades ago. If I remember correctly, it was referred to as “Boeing” in the ATC communications.

Tricky airport; it’s busy, and there are other large airports nearby that you have to avoid.

I think it would be fun to name airports after the most common local reason for flight delays. There must be some foggy place they could name after Mel Torme

The problem is, if they call it something like Oakland-San Francisco Airport, people might get confused when they see SFO on the tags and think it’s the new name for Oakland. Personally, I have a feeling that if they do name it for somebody, it would be long-serving U.S. Representative Ron Dellums. If it “has to” be a celebrity, the reasonably obvious choice is Rickey Henderson.
