TV producer and executive Don Ohlmeyer has died at 72.
A friend of Stanislav Petrov is reporting that “history’s greatest hero” died back in May (age 77).
My Google-fu isn’t turning up anything to corroborate this.
But yeah, everybody on this planet can thank Petrov for our not having had an all-out nuclear war in 1983. (As us peaceniks used to say, one nuclear war can ruin your whole day. :)) In the past few years, he’s finally gotten a bit of recognition for that.
It’s been picked up by a German news ticker. They call it “inofficial”, but credible enough to pass on.

I found it a long time ago (like 15 years or more long time ago) on a website that had a listing (and link) to the best 404 URL not found pages out there at the time. I don’t recall what either of the websites were now, but I do remember the one that had the 404 had an image of a raven on the right side and the poem on the left. Googling hasn’t turned up anything but reddit and bash posts and knockoffs that arose from a later date, so I’m guessing that this website was the original to use this.
ETA: And I’ve had this signature for most of my time as a member here. It’s just showing up again because with the new board software, signatures are now on by default. And I’m too lazy/too forgetful to uncheck the box.
