Former California Governor George Deukmejian has died

“Menards guy” Ray Szmanda dead at 91:

I’m sort-or related to Ray. My sister’s husband’s sister is Ray’s daughter-in law
(I DID say sort-of)

Chuck Knox, a three-time N.F.L. coach of the year who believed so strongly in the running game that he earned the nickname Ground Chuck, but who persuaded the New York Jets to take the pass-throwing Joe Namath in the draft, died on Saturday. He was 86.

Now he’s fully earned his nickname.

I drove by the Seahawks training facility yesterday and saw a hand printed sign on the Seahawks sign that said “RIP Chuck”. Had no idea what it meant till I watch the news a bit later.

Quick! Someone fly around the world really fast!

no takers for any celebs listed since I last posted “no takers”

Author Tom Wolfe has died at the age of 87.

I loved The Right Stuff. R.I.P., Tom Wolfe.

Wolfe was one of my picks in this thread. His most recent work showed a noticeable drop in quality that suggested a decline in mental coherence which I picked up on at least a year ago. But he was one of my favorite writers ever. I’ve never encountered another journalist who had the ability to combine extremely serious subject matter with a non-stop torrent of sarcastic humor. And his research into whatever he was writing about was always meticulous. He had the spirit of an anthropologist and the writing skill of a top-notch reporter, and the humor of a well-seasoned raconteur. I will miss him, a lot. It was always on my bucket list to meet him someday, and since there was only one degree of separation between us - a mutual friend, whose daughter also knew Wolfe’s daughter from college - I wish I had tried to make it happen a long time ago.

And you lose your Death Pool virginity to him.

First points for anyone in nearly a month.

Professional Golfer Doug Ford, dead at age 95. He won 19 PGA Tournaments including the 1955 PGA Championship and 1957 Masters.

He was Golf’s oldest living Major Champion, member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, and he played on 4 Ryder Cups, representing the USA.

I feel like there’s a joke to be made about electric Kool-Aid here but I just can’t think of one.

He has at last gone furthur.

Either he’s off the bus, or the rest of us are.

Prolific character actor Joseph Campanella 93.

That’s a (bittersweet) Unique Pick, first pick of the year, first Death Pool pick, and 13 points for Jacquernagy:

AFL. It became AFC when the two leagues merged (and the Steelers, Colts, and what are now the Ravens (the “original” Cleveland Browns), switched from one to the other so each would have 13).
