Bill Gold, creator of iconic movie posters as disparate as Casablanca and A Clockwork Orange, has died at age 97.
The links are from a slideshow of 30 of his best. I had a good time flipping through the whole thing.

I saw Nick Nolte in something recently and thought of him for this thread. He’s had well-publicized drug and alcohol problems in the past, and from recent pictures of him…well, I really, really don’t like to sound judgmental about someone’s appearance, and I certainly HOPE he is in good health…but he looks both haggard and overweight. That’s not typically a combination that bodes well for someone’s long-term prospects. But again, you can’t always judge someone’s health on their appearance.
Something I’m unfortunately realizing now, is that anyone who has had ongoing struggles with drug addiction can die at any moment, because of how easy it is to take too much of the opiates that are out nowadays. Fentanyl is racking up a horrific body count. Even if someone appears to have been clean for a while, slipping up now has a smaller margin for error than ever.
I never would have guessed that the guy who designed the poster for Casablanca was still alive this year. I thought Madeleine Lebeau (who died in 2016) was the last person associated with that movie.
I have no idea what his health is like but I’ve heard him on podcasts promoting his recent book. He sounds very clear headed.
Famed author Philip Roth-dead at age 85.
“Score” another one for me…ugh.
I had Philip Roth and Ursula LeGuin the last few years as part of my Dead Letters themed lists. This year I decide not to play and they both finally die.

I thought he was dead. Now I’m right.
I know it is unofficial but I want to add Harvey Weinstein. I think he will be swinging from the bars of his cell rather than face prison.

Looks like you, me, and CAMJAY77 had him. ![]()
Astronaut Alan Bean age 86
I had him a few years ago when I had an astronaut themed list. It was all folks who’d walked on the moon, or were “firsts” in other areas. So I also had Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. I had Bean as one of the surviving astronauts who walked on the moon.
I don’t find anything on Goggle, but did Bean have some screwy idea about aliens and/or the Ark of the Covenant?
This story says he left nothing personal, but another says he threw his astronaut pin into a crater.
James Irwin who also walked on the moon searched for Noah’s Ark.
You’d think that I, of all players, would know better than to not keep an upcheck on my list, or provide alternates.
I’ve just discovered that two of my selections died in December of 2017, the oldest two on the list. Sure, the points would have been few, but they were both unique.
My favorite astronaut was Buzz Aldrin, for his punching of that moon hoaxer.
