“has cancer” – I know a few people who might dispute that phrasing
I always thought Bourdain was an asshole ever since he said, “I can’t find a decent restaurant in all of Los Angeles.”
Or possibly a huge band wagon if the doctors are wrong.
I think he probably would agree with you. He was a hipster. He couldn’t admit to liking anything popular. He did admit to his prejudices from time to time. On one of his shows he was in Las Vegas and ate at a celebrity chef’s restaurant (Bobby Flay I think). He didn’t like to do it but he had to admit the food was good.
Does anyone else wonder if he might have - umm - done aDavid Carradine?
I’m sorry the Bourdain has died, but I was never a fan, just didn’t get around to it. Now, if you said Andrew Zimmern had offed himself I’d be crying. And he did once try to do it, but lived through the experience. In his case is was booze, attempted alcohol poisining. That’s why he never drinks now, and occaisionally mentions “getting sober” Zimmern looks like he’s having fun with his shows, Bourdain seemed to me to be glum a lot.
Kind of glum, but also very sociable and fun. I didn’t think he would kill himself because he enjoyed food and dining so much.
Yeah, well, I recall a lively, intelligent, decent and funny guy named Robin Williams. No way to tell whose demons are the nastiest.
One would think that a lot of money would help.
Money won’t buy you happiness, but it is nice to have it around if you need anything.
Ask that airplane guy with the long fingernails. I would venture his wealth may not have been the best thing for his condition.
Who’s the airplane guy with the long fingernails?
I was thinking of Robin Williams too. I’m sure many were. Sad, so sad.
Howard Hughes.
Someone should check the brakes his wheelchair.
NO BUENO

Oh, thanks. From a 1979 article in People magazine,
Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Danny Kirwan Dead at 68
I am sitting here reading about 10cc, and I think, how did I end up here? Traced my steps back to Danny Kirwan dying. Who had nothing at all to do with 10cc, but curse you, internet, for linking everything to everything else, that we end up taking these long strange — crap …
Eunice Gayson, the first Bond Girl, dies at 10 points.
And she was a perfect 10 (she’s at the far left). Rest in Peace, Eunice.
Robin Williams wasn’t depressed or sad or battling demons. He had Lewy body dementia.
Correct. It’s like a form of rapidly progressing Parkinson’s Disease and it caused him tremendous suffering, which he ended voluntarily. While Williams may indeed have struggled with depression and drug/alcohol addiction in his life, it wasn’t the cause of his death.
The “airplane guy” Howard Hughes, who actually accomplished many other things besides his advances in aircraft engineering, had the extreme misfortune of living at a period in history where there was no adequate treatment for helping moderate the obsessive-compulsive mentality that he had. That same mentality, when it was focused on something productive, led him to achieve great things that others would have lacked the necessary dedication and attention to detail. When it wasn’t focused on something productive, his mind was just spinning in circles and that way lies disaster.
Today there are effective treatments for OCD, but there was no amount of money that could have helped Howard Hughes.
There will eventually be cures for Parkinson’s, cancer, and other things that we don’t currently have cures for. The catch is, it might take someone with the Howard Hughes mentality to come up with it.
