At least Ray Sawyer was able to make the cover of the Rolling Stone before he died…as well as their obituary section after.
(The picture on the cover was really a drawing of three of the Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show band members including Sawyer, and apparently he went straight to the offices to buy five copies for his mother.)

The tricky part is, that site doesn’t distinguish between the living and the dead. I was looking at the 1943 page, and George Harrison and Janis Joplin are right in there next to Mick Jagger and John Denver.
