Celebs you just don't hate as much as everyone else does

She was protesting sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church (she added a line about it in the song she was singing- some cover). I was shocked that people were so shocked. Fight the real enemy is right, I thought. I guess many people weren’t aware of the extent of the abuse at that point (1992) (or, like now, they just don’t care that much). In all fairness, I had just seen The Boys of St. Vincent. Of course, I don’t really care for Sinead’s current take on the act- she’s now deeply embarrassed and religious. Whee.

I would think EVERYONE would join her in ripping up/burning the picture of the Pope.

Howard Cosell. I not only didn’t hate him, I thought he was the most entertaining sportscaster of his day.

This thread reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut’s saying

I think Britney Spears is darling.

I don’t hate or love any celebrities, I don’t know any of them personally. There are some, I don’t think they’re talented at all and I wonder why people like 'em (like Alan Arkin) but I don’t even hate Arkin.

Keep in mind that what most people saw was Sinead O’Connor coming onto stage, singing a song they didn’t understand the words to, then holding up a picture of the Pope and saying “fight the real enemy” while ripping the picture in half.

What she meant was noble and well-intentioned. (Assuming it was all about pedophiliac priests, which is debatable.) What she conveyed was far more inflammatory and bigoted.

I think Kelly Clarkson is pretty good, actually.

I actually like to watch Julia Roberts’s movies. And despite his Scientology ties, I like Tom Cruise’s movies, too. I don’t know if I hate or like any celebrity since I don’t know any. If I say, “I like so-and-so celebrity,” I mean their body of work, not the celebrities themselves. (As I’m sure most people do.)

The song Sinead sang is called “War,” a Bob Marley song that is, in fact, a speech originally made by Haile Selassie set to music.

The speech itself, spoken to the UN by the ruler of Eithiopia in 1963, has nothing at all to do with sexual abuse of any kind. It quite clearly denounces racism.

Also, Sinatra made the “kick her in the ass” comment regarding the fact that Sinead threatened to cancel her scheduled concert in New Jersey if The Star Spangled Banner was played before the show began. That happened a good two years before the SNL incident.

And on preview:

I also think Kelly Clarkson is pretty good.

I agree with much of this, though Scrappy is just mildy annoying, and Ben stiller I used to like more then I do now. Though I suspect it’s because his movies seem somewhat repetative lately.

Christensen isn’t so much a bad actor is that he’s given nothing to work with. If Lucas could write dialouge that was worth a damn, it wouldn’t be much of a problem.

Count me as one who doesn’t get the Paris Hilton/Britney Spears loathing. Well, actually I get it, I just don’t share it. Frankly, I’d still probably be happy to give them both a decent grope and poke.

As for the Sinead hijack, I always took the loathing after the SNL thing as being less about indignace over dissing the Pope, and more about general annoyance over celebs going all political. Back then activist celebs were rare and generally disliked, and the way in which she did it seemed particularly artificial and juvenile. I’ve got no love for the Pope, I just thought it was lame and out of place.

Ben Affleck doesn’t deserve the shit he catches either. I think he mostly caught shit that was intended to be lobbed at J-Lo. However, the over-exposure hurt him more than he deserved. It’s not like he stunk up any beloved movie roles or forced himself into the spotlight. I still enjoy several of his movies and think that Project Greenlight is good fun.

I would do Melissa Rivers.

I frequent a celebrity message board, and seem to be the only person there that doesn’t hate Catherine Zeta Jones and/or Michael Douglas. I happen to think CJZ is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous (second only to Liz Taylor, in her heyday) and I have always thought Michael Douglas was a damn decent actor. So what if they’re May/December? It’s not like it’s never been done.

Anyway, I’ll continue to get flamed there for liking 'em, and that’s ok. I really do think they’re fun and seem to be very happy together.

Er, that would be CZJ…I tend to want to alphabetize her initials.

Put me down as not hating any celbrity. i may find them boring and talentless, but then I just don’t go to their movies.

tom Cruise… loved him in Risky Business and havn’t seen another good film out of him since.

Kevin Costner seem sto be good in films I normally wouldn’t like. I normally like sci/fi/fantasy movies and I hated Waterworld and Robin Hood. Normally loath gangster films, loved The Untouchables, normally hate westerns, loved Dances with Wolves. Go figure.

The only thing I’ve ever seen Paris Hilton in was on SNL and I thought it was quite funny. Yes, it was juvenile and it was actually Jimmy Fallon making the jokes, but it made me laugh.

CZJ is the celeb I thought of when I saw this thread. I think she’s beautiful - I don’t get why people thinks she looks older than her age. They must be confusing classic, old-fashioned beauty with being older. I can understand why she would be pissed off with one magazine sneaking out photos of her wedding when she’d signed an exclusive deal with another magazine and don’t understand why people hate her for that. I admire her very much, especially in Chicago, and believe she’s very talented and deserves her fame.

I wouldn’t say I like Kathy Lee Gifford, but I don’t understand why people hate her, either.

Barbara Walters. My mother, for one, gets spitting mad at the mention of her name. I’ve never understood why.

Martha Stewart. (The stock scandal is NOT relevant here; lots of people hated her long before that.) Yes, she’s rich, but she didn’t hold anybody at gunpoint and make them buy her company’s stock, so why hate her for that? And yes, she is known to say things like “Hors d’ouvres can be as simple as caviar on toast points” (not in my neighborhood, try cheese and crackers) and “Now we must julienne our jicama” (you do it, I’ll watch). But there again, if you don’t care for it, watch any of the other approximately 8475 cooking and decorating shows on television. And the KMart towels are very nice quality for the money.

I like Catherine Zeta-Jones. She’s pretty and a really decent actress.

Renee Zellweger-I don’t care if she is insecure with a puffy face, I like her.

Celine Dion. Even if you don’t like her music (I do), you have to admit, she’s NOT really a diva at all.

Charlton Heston
Mel Gibson
Kevin Costner
William Shatner
Sir Rhosis

Word

Word. Sure, between them they’ve got some bad movies but several decent and good ones as well.

Related to those guys, I do not hate Adam Sandler like some people seem to do for the same reasons.

Word, especially in 3.

Are there people who hate CZJ? Why? She looks good and seems to be a decent enough actor. Does she torture little puppies or anything?
