Cell phone help - blocked numbers

My wife and I have a old cell (Moto e5 Play about 5 years old, uses Verizon) that we keep at home as a “landline” that we only give out the number to businesses we use.

We get occasional spam calls, block them and no worries. Two days ago we got a call offering us help with our Medicare coverage. Since neither of us has Medicare, I blocked it and forgot about it. Since then the phone, without ringing, will beep that we have a voicemail. This has happened 5 times a day, no phone ringing but a voicemail from this :helpful: Medicare guy.

Google turned up no solutions that work so I need you folks to come thru for me. Not a major problem but it is irritating.

Just a shot in the dark here, but this seems like it fits your situation:

Blocking from the phone sends the call to voicemail automatically.

Blocking the number from your MyVerizon account online will not allow them to call or text you at all. The caller will hear a message saying the number you are trying to reach has calling restrictions or something similar.

Since the calls are coming from the same number, it might be a “legitimate” company (the full on scammers call from spoofed numbers and change them every time). See if you can find the company and report them (or the salesman) to Medicare.

Already tried this one, apparently you can no longer block numbers online. Or I’m too stupid to find it.

The phone number doesn’t exist according to google and no company is listed when they call.

I did find a fix, although it’s weird. I took the number off the block list so now when they call my phone reads potential spam, I reject the call and for some reason they are unable to leave a message this way.

Thanks for the ideas though! It’s strange when you can’t find a simple answer to something like this just from googling and my fix is not ideal.

You could try scam-baiting him. Make up a fake name, birthday and Medicare number. (PDF) Pretend you’re interested and just waste his time. He’ll likely never call back once he knows you’ll just waste his time.

I don’t know what you know/don’t know or have/haven’t tried, but …

Recognize that this feature has a couple of pretty material limitations outlined in this web page.

Yep, saw that page but the Account > My Plan > Block doesn’t exist on the website anymore. The Block part specifically.

Sometimes I wish I had the patience to do that kind of stuff.

I’ve tried but I have problems sounding dumb when I’m trying to, I generally only sound dumb when I’m not trying to. :frowning:

For this, you just have to sound interested. Let them go through their pitch/script and ask the sort of questions any ordinary person would ask such as switching doctors, per-existing conditions, Rx plans, etc.
