Cell Phone Network Anomalies

Is anyone else experiencing problems with their cell phone network? My wife and I have AT & T, and lately we are having some severe issues with our phones. Specifically, calls aren’t getting through and we don’t get an indication of a missed call. However, we get a voice mail from the caller.

Sometimes, when one of our daughters can’t get my wife, they will call me and the call gets through, even though we are sitting right next to each other. My brother and I have been playing phone tag for the past few days, where the receiver’s phone never rings and the caller leaves a voice mail. The subsequent calls all start out, “That’s weird, I was sitting right next to my phone and it never rang and I don’t have a missed call.”

My wife and I have run a few tests, calling each others’ phone and though it rings on the caller’s end, it never rings on the receiver’s end. And again, there is no indication of a missed call.

I don’t believe the types of phones involved are the issue. I have an HTC Vivid, my wife has a Pantech Burst, one daughter has some sort of Samsung on Sprint (I think), the other daughter is on Sprint or possibly Verizon, and both of my brothers have iPhones on AT & T.

I don’t want this to devolve into an “AT & T sucks, you need to go with [insert competitor here]” discussion. I just want to know if other people are experiencing any issues like this.

I thought it might be due to the solar activity in late November or early December, but this has been going on now for about 5-6 weeks and is getting really annoying.

Anyone else having these issues?

Not recently, but I’ve definitely had issues like that in the past. Sometimes it’s been the phone…sometimes the network. I’d expect it to be the network in more cases for most people - I tend to carry pre-released software on pre-released hardware.

I’d also expect it to be location dependent…as in, drive five minutes away and get a different behavior.

Great username/post combo there, Digital. Both of our phones are running Android 4.0. Mine came with it out of the box, and we just upgraded my wife’s phone to 4.0 a few months ago. She was having problems before the upgrade, but they seem to have gotten worse.

The maddening part is that it is not predictive. Sometimes I get calls in my house or at my work, and sometimes I don’t. Of course, the only way I know I am missing calls is when someone reaches out to me on a different medium to ask if I am ignoring their cell phone calls.

Your experience sounds a lot like the cell-towers in your area are in the process of being worked on, probably for upgrades, since it would take them a while to get them all done. The effects of that could even possibly be seen on multiple carriers, since they often have roaming agreements amongst each other to cover each other’s spotty areas. (With associated fees paid between themselves, so it’s invisible to most customers, whose plans include roaming.)

You don’t mention your area, but there are various forums you could check for any news about your area. I’d say check AT&T’s website, but I’m not that cruel/naive to think that would be helpful, since they have one of the worst, most frustrating websites in existence. Calling them and asking would probably be preferable, and even that I put up there with a having a prostate exam.
