After getting my wireless network, I’ve decided to go all the way to cellular modem capability.
I have access to the following phones:
A Motorola StarTac
An Ericsson A1228di
I’m on the Cingular network, should that influence what equipment I need.
And as far as laptops go, I want to use the phone on the following equipment:
A HP laptop
A PowerBook
A Newton PDA
I have only a vague idea of what I need. I know I need some sort of cable to connect the phone to the laptop. I would prefer to directly connect the phone to the serial port so I don’t have to buy a seperate modem card. I also know I need a CCL file to tell the computer how to use the phone. That’s all I know.
I don’t know the protocols or frequencies that Cingular operates on. But if your phone works on Cingular, i don’t think that would affect the hardware you require to hook-up.
Also, if your phones have an infra-red modem in-built, you don’t even need any cables. Just align the infra-red ports of both the phone and the laptop/pda and install software on your laptop/PC and you’re ready to go.
Perhaps your phone manufacturers website might have information on the cables required.
You could be boned when it comes to the Powerbook and Newton (! dude! you are excellently old-school!). I just tried to figure out how to connect my iBook via cellular modem, but my provider (Voicestream) is only set up to allow PCs to connect. Cingular could be different, though–I’d talk to them, first.
Update: I talked to Cingular, and found that both of my phones won’t work. I’ve found a phone that will allow me to connect, it’s an Ericsson T60d. Now, all I need are the drivers and/or modem scripts. Is there a website that has this info?
