CFL Football: A week to the Grey Cup

Absolutely, it was an unbelievable error. BTW, the Als played very well (most of) this season and during the first half of this game, they just weren’t on.

Montreal won. That’s the game. There is no doubt about that. This isn’t the first championship that was lost on such a “technicality”.

My brother lives in Edmonton, I just won my bet.

I missed the entire game - I just got back from rehearsal to get the news. AAAAAHH! Riders!?! What were you thinking?

Off to cry myself to sleep…

Glad to see the Alouettes could win the Grey Cup by only showing up to the second half of the game! Boneheaded move by the Riders, but seriously, you gotta want it, and that means playing through to the final second and not doing stupid-ass shit like having 13 men on the field!

We’ll take it! Félicitations aux Alouettes!!!

All the local media are stunned by the turn of events, but the headline I preferred was in La Presse: “Le grand vol des Alouettes” - translated liberally as The Great Flight of Larks, or The Larks’ Great Steal.

I still think the Als deserved the cup for their season, if not for that game. That was the most unforgettable finale I ever saw.

You can look at any football game and conclude the same thing. The score wasn’t 3-0. Change any one of 100 plays and the result could have been different; had the same error been made in the first quarter and the score remained the same you wouldn’t be claiming it was decided on a “technicality.”

Montreal absolutely won the Cup. It’s not just about the last game and it’s not just about one play in the last game.

After being utterly dumbfounded for about 10 minutes after it happened, I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t really the critical play. I mean, it was, but… the Riders had contained the Als for over 50 minutes, and then seemed to just stop and let them do whatever they wanted for the final 10. We gave up 17 points during those 10 minutes, and did absolutely nothing (except throw a pick) on offense. Only 3 of those points were scored on the final play.

Plus we totally got away with pass interference on that convert.

I came up with four “moments” other than the penalty that could have turned the game right after it happened.

  1. Congi’s first missed FG
  2. Going for a FG instead of a TD at the end of the half
  3. declining the penalty the second time to give up a single
  4. not pressuring Calvillo on the final series, like at all (not really a moment, but…)

It’s hard to get over the boneheadedness and the timing of that penalty, though.

I don’t know a whole lot about the history of the CFL but I really dig the little guys from up north and I want to pick a favorite team. I’m not sure who to go for. The Stamps have a fun nickname, I like that, The Stamps. The Riders have the goofy Watermelon tradition and small town under dog thing which is nice, but any analogue with the Packers is simply a deal breaker. Though as a Cubs fan I probably would relate with the crushing loss. I will have to make an effort to follow and decide on a team next year.

Alouettes! Alouettes! Cheer for the Alouettes!
I probably won’t be able to see the parade on Wednesday, since I have one final project to finish for school (group project meeting).

The French thing will be a tough one to get past. But then again if I had to pick a CFL city to go party in before and after a game Montreal would be at the top of the list.

Whatever you do, don’t pick the Lions. Cuz BC sucks. If the Riders are out (and you really should reconsider that), I think you should go with the Ti-Cats.

I think there are as many French players on any CFL team as on the Als, but I’m not sure. I usually watch football in English on TSN anyways (football = English, hockey = French…yeah, I’m weird), so it’s not like you have to be stuck listening to RDS. And Montreal is a great place to party!

I have a soft spot for the Ti-Cats too, because I lived in Hamilton for a while (though I never went to a game), and I like their uniforms. It’s also fun to sing Oskie Wee-Wee!

As Jim said, the Riders had to dig deep and come up with a way to lose that game. They made this Saskatchewan-born Grey Cup baby very, very sad. :frowning:

Oskie Wee-Wee? Is that like Oskee Wow Wow??!?! We might have something here.

Oskie Wee Wee!
Oskie Wa Wa!
Holy Makinaw!
Tigers…Eat 'em RAW!

Not really a song, but it makes me laugh!

just re-surfacing on the Dope after being struck with plague, but I have to say that Gorsnak and RickJay are right - the Riders let it slip away in the last ten minutes and the Als delivered. Darn it!

À la prochaine année!
