ch-ch-ch-Chia!

Last weekend at Costco I discovered chia. Curious, I bought a bag of it. This morning I threw a few spoonfuls into a cup of yogurt and mixed it up.

It’s pretty good. Just slightly crunchy, not obnoxiously so. And if you leave it alone for a bit the seeds soften up. It’s a nice flavor, not sweet or bitter, a bit like unsalted raw nuts (though less rich).

On top of all that, it’s pretty good for you: three tablespoons has 12 grams of dietary fiber. Throw that in a cup of yogurt as a mid-morning snack, and presto: you’re just about half way to your RDA of fiber.

And all this time I’ve been using it on my head…

(You wouldn’t laugh if you could see me make points with the chicks… when their cats start nipping at my lush green head of hair)

I love the stuff. You can make a breakfast thingy too, blend up a banana and a cup or so of almond milk or soy milk or whatever, mix in the chia seeds (one quarter of a cup or so? I use four heaping soup spoons worth) and let it sit while you shower. Fifteen or twenty minutes or so. Mix it up and eat it, if you want the seeds softer leave it longer. I add in a tablespoon of peanut butter when I’m feeling feisty. Maybe some blueberries on top.
