In G. K. Chesterton’s famous essay A Defense of Rash Vows, he lists several examples of the ridiculous vows that people took during the Middle Ages. He claims that one man vowed to chain two mountains together (and did so) and another vowed to walk to Jerusalem blindfolded (and died in the attempt). Is this true? If so, who were these two guys?
