Challenge us with a non-famous line from a movie

Thinking back though, though Mr Fox was an RAF pilot in that film, I believe the green pilot in that scene was a different one. Looked kinda’ like him though.

Could be. I haven’t seen the movie in almost 40 years now. IIRC, the scene I was thinking of comes almost at the end.

Superman, the Movie. Larry Hagman, as the officer in command of the soldiers whom Miss Tessmacher distracts so Lex Luthor can reprogram the nuclear missile.

Is it? I remember that scene, but not what Hagman said (at least not exactly).

I’ll take your word for it, but the movie I was thinking of is far, far removed from Superman!

I’ll give you a hint: It’s set in 1915.

“To know death, Otto, you have to fuck life… in the gall bladder!”

Okay, that’s close, but still not the movie I was thinking of. The movie I had in mind is a real downer.

Another hint: It’s based on a real historical event.

“Shoot straight you bastards”

Clue 1 - It’s a movie based on a real historical event
Clue 2 - It’s spoken by a British soldier
Clue 3 - It’s not Breaker Morant.

Zulu?

Zulu Dawn, actually. And I thought it would take longer than that.

Zulu’s the first movie I thought of with British soldiers doing lots and lots of shooting!

Aintry.

Many people probably already know it but James Dickey, author of the book, played the sheriff in the film.

I thought he was really good.

To recap:

  1. Not Superman: The Movie.
  2. Based on a real historical event.
  3. Set in 1915.
  4. A real downer.

The Outlaw Josey Wales

“Did I tell you? First time I ever met you - felt like I’d seen you before.”

Nobody’s got these yet, so…

"This is a spirit like a wavering flame which only needs care to burn high. If this does not happen, she could lapse into the promiscuity and bitterness of the failed romantic.”

Billy Kwan writing about Jill Bryant in The Year of Living Dangerously.

“Don’t you ever clean this armpit of a room?”

Roy Scheider to Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man.

“These Americans! They sacrifice themselves like samurai warriors!”

Japanese admiral watching the Torpedo 8 attack in Midway.

“Normandie!”

Rommel learning of “die Invasion” in The Longest Day.

“Sir, there’s a chap outside, sir, who’s pinching our petrol.”

Australian naval officer referencing Cary Grant in Father Goose.

“Can’t ask the men to do something I wouldn’t do myself.”

Mel Gibson’s CO just before the ANZACs go over the top in Gallipoli.

“Good kill!”

Sgt Steiner (James Coburn) after taking out a Russian mortar crew in Cross of Iron.

New one:

“His boots. They’re on the wrong feet.”

Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein, an abysmal film (and not even directed by Andy Warhol).

Nevertheless, the line IS spoken in Breaker Morant, too, by Harry Morant, who adds “Don’t make a mess of it!”

Richard Burton, The Longest Day

New one: “Well, they’ve got a very good bass section, mind, but no top tenors, that’s for sure.”

Sigh. Yes, I know. That’s why I made a point of saying it isn’t that film.
