Challenge! Who is the man sitting with all the stars on Johnny Carson?

NOT Hans Conried. I’ve seen him many times on TV. Not him.

I agree.

Burt Bacharach is the only guest host from 70-71 who resembles the picture at all. But it seems odd that he would host in New York one night, and California the next night. Joe Namath hosted the night before Bacharach, though, so maybe Carson was on extended leave. Or maybe the night before was also broadcast from CA.

If the guy next to Valentine is Ed McMahon, and John Wayne didn’t show up, then maybe the guy is someone Wayne sent to represent him. It could be someone from his agent’s office. It would also explain the boots-- he may have worn the boots Wayne wore in whatever he did that year that got him some award. There can’t be another night when all those people were on the show together.

It has been mentioned either here or on fb that Wayne was off shooting a movie. The mystery man is not wearing boots. If he were, his left leg would be 6’ long. It is just a photo glitch. If you print the pic it looks a lot clearer.

These are all TV people. The mm was not listed in TV Guide because they have limited space and it was either the luck of the draw or he was not big enough to make the cut.

I believe someone posted an article that stated 11/11/70 was the first broadcast night in LA.

I am just waiting to see if Carol Burnett remembers.

He’s not in the host’s chair.

Oh. I don’t watch the show, so I wouldn’t know.

How exactly did Photoplay honor these people?

Hmm. Burt Bacharach was married to Angie Dickinson, who was apparently the host of the awards, so I suppose it could still be Bacharach.

Except that’s not at all Burt Bacharach, who had much more hair in the '70s. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Burt_Bacharach_1972.JPG

Robert Vaughn? He won most popular male star in 1965.

Bad link on Burt B. Sorry. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Burt_Bacharach_1972.JPG

That’s more information than I’ve been able to find–where did you get it?

That was my thought too.

Look at the hair and the generous ears here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0175788/

Also, he played “Uncle Tonoose” on “The Danny Thomas Show” and “Make Room For Daddy” and “Make Room For Granddaddy” (1970-71) He would have been 54 in 1971.

He was a guest on the Tonight Show Sept. 23, 1971 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0726843/?ref_=tt_ep_ep194

A Photoplay website I have closed, so I can’t give you the URL, but I followed links checking sources on the Wiki entry.

Right now I’m still thinking he could be some rep of Wayne, who we wouldn’t be expected to recognize. Or maybe he had a minor role in whatever movie Wayne made most recently at the time.

Could it possibly be Forrest Tucker, Wayne’s costar in his 1970 film Chisum?

Not Robert Vaughan.

Wow. No, it’s not Forrest Tucker. By 1970 he was a hefty square jawed guy.

Maybe it was Larry Storch. At this point it might be easier to make a list of all the people he isn’t.

I found numerous references to Angie Dickenson hosting the 1977 Photoplay awards, includingthis slightly more detailed article that lists some winners between 1969 and 1978, which all other sources seem to lack. But I couldn’t find any references to her having any connection to the 1970 awards.

Given the number of references to the 1977 awards, all I can say is that they must have had lousy promotopms for the 1970 awards.

Hey, I’m throwing anything against the wall at this point.

All the lists of Photoplay winners end with 1968.
