Challenge! Who is the man sitting with all the stars on Johnny Carson?

Grace Zabriskie and Ted Bessell-- separated at birth.

Well I definitely would have tuned in at the time if anybody told me that Karen Valentine was going to be exposing herself.

I don’t know why they did it that way, but all the evidence points to it being so. I chalk it up to that being a different time.

Chances are they’re aware of the flap over this photo. Richman certainly was.

Hal Holbrook…?

No, I suppose not. I was just looking at 1971 Emmy winners, and he’s the only one even close.

my vote is for Sid Caesar, I didn’t think so before but look at this photo of him in [EMAIL=“Sid Caesar”]1969http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2056886272/nm0128377?ref_=nmmi_mi_all_pbl_13

if my link doesn’t work it is on the IMDB page for him.

I’m at 25% for Sid Caesar because of the face shape, but the hair just isn’t working for me. In particular that really deep part.

That pic is c.1954.

The ears are wrong. MM looks like he has attached earlobes, and Caesar has long, unattached lobes. The ears are the wrong shape, too.

Something occurred to me. This is not an on air shot because mm has his arm sprawled on the desk. If the show was hosted at that moment in time, it would be a very rude thing to do. And, the shot looks candid, not posed. Only Marlo is looking directly at the camera. Take any group of actors and if they are posing, they would look forward.

So, a candid, not great shot on the Tonght Show set. Yet, this is the one published in a ‘movie magazine’. Why? Why this particular one? The only answer I can come up with is that mm is a Photoplay executive. It is possible if that movie mag was Photoplay.

They’re not actively posing, but they’re lined up for the TV camera or a photographer. It’s during a commercial if it’s TV, or between shots if they’re being photographed. I don’t know if the arm on the desk has any meaning in that context.

Maybe it’s Dr. Paul Erlich. Or Fernando Lamas?

Damn, we’re up to nearly 17K views! Still no answer… I fear this may go down as one of those mysteries of the ages…

The guy who discovered gram-staining bacteria?

That’s it! It’s Edward G. Robinson. It doesn’t look like him because he’s 77 years old and wearing a disguise.

I thought of Paul Erlich earlier, as he was a perrenial guest back then. But the mystery man looks nothing like him. I already suggested Fernando Lamas and I think there’s a pretty good resemblance, but I don’t know that he can be linked to that event and the MM is wearing a tux so is probably part of the awards. Around 1970 Lamas was basically guest starring in short roles on TV, and his last movie was ‘100 Rifles’ in 1969. There are no awards for anything associated with the movie or the actor.

Also, he would have been 55 in 1970, and the MM doesn’t look that old.

Has anyone considered it might be this dude?

I considered that. Hair, chin, eyes are off. I think Hef looked younger than that in 1970.

Anyone think McMahon and Brolin are checking out Karen Valentine’s cleavage?

I still think Mystery Man has a very strong resemblance to Jean Paul Belmondo, even though he was in France for a lot of his career, he mingled with the Hollywood elite, was in Casino Royale, etc… au currant for the times. Here he is with his girlfriend Ursala Andress in Hollywood c.1969. Born in 1933, Jean Paul is 36 here:

Au courant.” The phrase is “au courant.”

Currants are used to make jams.
