Chandelier by Sia

After reading an article about Dance Mom’s star, Maddie Ziegler, dancing for a music video…I knew I had to watch it. I’m not a huge fan of the show, but I always thought the girls were very talented.

Chandelier is by Sia, an Australian recording artist/song writer. I watched the video in confusion, wondering what exactly I was watching.

After reading some of the YouTube comments, I looked into the meaning of the video. Apparently, Sia has dealt with substance abuse problems and this video depicts her (as a child) struggling with those problems. The choreography is also…strange, but this is an interpretation of her erratic behavior while using.

The lyrics (which I had to look up) are about a party girl that goes out to get wasted. She is ashamed of what she does when she wakes up the next morning, but to make the feelings fade, she goes out and gets wasted again.

After reading these explanations, I rewatched the video and had a whole new appreciation for the thought behind the music video.

What do others think of the video? Is it considered “art” to you? Do you have any other interpretations to add?
