The commercial is for perfume and Natalie Portman is running around very dramatically in very picturesque locals (all in France, I think) with a very dramatic song playing in the background. The first time I saw it, I thought it was an old-style SNL commercial parody.
This version is simultaneously the same, better and much worse. It is still very melodramatic. In fact, I don’t think we’ve seen such melodrama in a pop song since Kevin Costner swept Whitney Houston up in his arms. It is better because, wow, those are words in the song and not just back-of-the-throat warbling and this version is much, much worse because fuck clowns.
Apologizing for continuing this hijack, but YES! Not only is he a talented vocalist, his phrasing and arrangements are wonderful, he’s also a brilliant entertainer. He’s not just a clown singing a cover. He’s interpreting the cover and interacting with his audience. Despite his vocal talent, I don’t think he’d have as much success if he hadn’t adopted the clown shtick, because of the way it captures the viewer’s attention.
My first introduction to Puddles was his very creative Folsom Prison Blues (music)/Pinball Wizard (lyrics) mashup, but I truly think he was born to sing Bowie covers. His cover of Moon River may be one of the best ever and is certainly better than Audrey Hepburn’s. I have only scratched the surface of his work and every video makes me happier and happier.
Yes, lots of people hate clowns, for good reason, but I feel like Puddles is trying to remedy that. He’s definitely not your average clown. Even Simon Cowell likes him!
I have seen Piddles before and why the hell does he have to dress like Pagliacci? Is he trying to make a scary Halloween point? He does sing well but. . . Arrrgghhh! It’s like his every video is the intro to American Horror Story.
