Change in doggie sleeping habits- pleasant but puzzling

Auggie, The Cutest Dog on the Planet ™, came to us as a 6-month-old stray in 2002. We put a dog bed in our bedroom, but he almost never used it. He woudl come into the bedroom and sleep on his bed if there was a thunderstorm because he was scared, but other that that, he prefers to sleep on the couch.

2 1/2 years go we got little teeny kittens that are now big honkin’ cats. hey have slept in our bedroom since we got them.

In Dec of last year, I got a really bad case of the 'flu. Then it blossomed into pleuresy. I was home from work a lot through Dec, Jan and Feb. Auggie suddenly started sleeping on his bed in our room whenever I was in the bedroom. Now, he sleeps in there every night. Not always the whole night, but he will always come in with me when I go to bed.

Why is he suddenly sleeping on his bed in our room? I have a few theories-

  • He got inot the habit when I was sick and never got out of it.

  • It’s taken him 2 1/2 years to figure out that the cats sleep there and he’s decided he doesn’t want to be left out.

  • The bedroom is the most comfortable room in the house- the thermostat is in there so it’s the coolest room in the summer and the warmest one in the winter.

  • Auggie has a brain the size of a walnut and I should give up trying to figure out what goes on in there.

Obligatory cute pic of Auggie asleep (not on his doggie bed):

Well he started sleeping in there with you because you were sick. It’s been shown that dogs in particular can tell when you’re sick, and may very well stay by your side to watch over you and make sure you’re okay.
Then after you got better, he sticks around to make sure you’re still okay by sleeping with you in your room, at least for a while.

That’s what I think anyway. He loves you and wants to make sure you’re gonna be okay.
