Changed function on aging threads?

Usually, a thread that isn’t read gets ‘aged’ into being ‘already read’ after about two hours. At least during the day; in the early morning, the time is longer. There’s several differences apparent to the user: whether the thread title is shown in boldface or not in the list of threads; which article comes up when you hit “go to first new post”; and how long the thread shows up in the list of subscribed threads in the User CP.

Today, that time limit seems to have changed. I’m not sure what it’s changed to, since I haven’t seen any aged off the list. It’s now after 2 p.m. local and threads last posted to at 9:30 this morning are still in boldface. And threads from that time are still showing up in my User CP page. Perhaps they’ve changed it so only threads that have actually been read get that treatment. I know this is how most other message boards do it, but those don’t have the volume this one does.

I’ve never looked into what algorithm they use for that. I have always had the impression that it is based more on post counts than time passed. We are getting fewer posts than we used to (it’s not just us, it’s all message boards, we’re actually doing better than most), so since it takes longer for us to reach the same post count, I would expect it to take longer for posts to “age”.

I thought it was based on when you’ve been active on the boards. Like, if after going to bed tonight (June 18) you went into a coma, and didn’t wake up for six months, when you logged back in a thread from June 19 would still show as “unread”.

It’s not how long one has been logged off or inactive in other ways. I never log off and was fairly active during that period I cited in the OP. The total posts might be the thing, though.

It’s not only that, but threads don’t age out at all while you’re not logged in.
