Is there a setting that will make the board show posts as read only if I read them? When I’m logged in, it shows posts/threads as read after I just check the board, without actually looking at the thread in question. In other words, if time passes and I don’t open the thread, it looks like there are no new posts since last time I opened it.
This is in contrast to how the board works when I’m visiting without being logged in. When I read the board that way, only threads I’ve opened show as read, and threads I haven’t opened stay unread. I’d like that same behavior for when I’m logged in as well.
It’s the main thing that keeps me from logging in most of the time, and keeps me from posting more (I’m sure you all miss me during those times). My obsessive nature makes me worried that I’ll miss something by skipping over threads that show read when I haven’t reopened them.
Just to clarify, I guess I really mean that I want the board to continue to show that there are new posts until I actually open the thread. I don’t want the passage of time to get rid of the new posts icon.
My understanding is that there is a vBulletin option to track actually read threads/messages, but it would take more hamsters with bigger brains - it’s more processor and memory intensive.
The SDMB servers can’t handle having that open enabled…so we deal with what we have.
I’m not sure the “Not logged in” behavior works the way you are suggesting it does. When you aren’t logged in, the board doesn’t track anything you do at that level. Any features you are seeing are on your end, due to your web browser remembering links.
It’s definitely not the browser remembering links. It’s the actual new threads status changing, only for the threads I open. It’s worked the same way with IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Once I close the browser, it all gets reset, but each day, the server keeps careful track of which threads I’ve opened and those I haven’t.
