Changing The Surroundings- Human Condition or just bored?

We re-painted the living room and dining room. It’s never been blue, now it’s blue. I’ve been cutting crown moulding for hours/days. Tomorrow it goes up.

Why do people alter their surroundings periodically? Does everyone? I don’t have the money for furniture, and so we will keep what we have. Were we of a means to do so, we might get different furniture.

I could very well have 6 pair of beige Dockers, and some shirts to go with…for…YEARS. Why do people shift tastes, when the feeling of routine and consistency is so comforting?? I don’t get it.

I like the paint job, I think the house will look nice. It looked nice before, and it was pale peach with no mouldings.

So, exactly why do I go though this? It wasn’t a Honey-Doo job, I came up with the game plan, and we did a lot of the work together. ( Miserable experience, with the Wifestrocity ).

Does everyone change their home periodically???

Cartooniverse

Rarely have we changed things merely with paint. We prefer moving walls and building in cabinetry. Then again, we fall into the category of “Engineers Who KNOW They Can Do It Better.”

I think sometimes we just want to change thing - whether it’s the way the furniture is situated or the color of the walls or the style of window coverings. Why? Why not?

My personal problem is that I love watching HGTV - I get lots of ideas. Expensive ideas. But since we’re selling this house in less than 2 years, I’m suppressing my urges. But in the NEXT house…

“Just bored” is the Human Condition!

I’ve lived in this house for ooo, just the 2 years. We decorated when we moved in (except for this room where I am right now, which is so full of stuff and technology and guitars and stuff that it would be much too much like hard work). Last week I decided that the kitchen was “too white”. White and cream plates on steel shelves against a white wall, white door, etc. So I’m going to paint one wall pale blue.

How about painting the old furniture and/or making some new slipcovers out of some exciting fabric, “Trading Spaces” style?

Not me. With the rest of the world changing so fast, I need a place which I can be sure will stay the same, to serve as a refuge.

When I move into an apartment of my own, I plan on keeping whichever wallpaper/paint colors it came with till the day I die.

And I won’t move unless they tear the building down.

HGTV is a tool of evil world conquering furniture re-arranging wives. Well, at least mine. Every so often (this isn’t an easy story to relate, as she’s sitting here reading over my shoulder, y’know) mine gets on this kick. Rooms get painted, things get shifted around (and by things, I mean everydamnthing), cabinets and bookcases and such get removed/built/installed etc.

I’d blame this on some weird genetics thing, but my mother is the same bloody way. And her mother isn’t. Maybe it’s just some random mutant gene on the second X chromosome; I believe it may be the same gene that builds a little swivel into their necks when in public.

Am I the only one who finds himself telling his SO to 'Stop staring, dear," while in a restaurant or mall at least three times a week?

But of course, it ain’t just women, as I’ve learned here. I guess I’m just gonna hafta “me too” with Neidhart. But perhaps, if we consider FairyChatMom and her Mr. as the exception that proves the rule, this is some kinda evolutionary thing, wherein when someone has this rearranging gene, they become attracted to someone without it, so as to maintain stability in the gene pool?
Naaaaah. It’s gotta be brain controlling rays from HGTV.

My parents’ house is, as Douglas Coupland would say, “The House That Time Forgot”. I think the newest thing in Mom and Dad’s place is maybe 35 years old, with the exception of a microwave oven that my sister gave them, which they are scared to use.

Same goes for my apartment, except I use my microwave. I like all of the old junk in my place, which is stuff I grew up around anyhow, so it’s familiar. I like the feeling of all of those generations pressing down on me (most of the time; sometimes it does get a bit close), kind of like a heavy blanket on a winter night.
I like things around me on the outside to stay the same, because on the inside my brain feels like a gas storm on Jupiter most of the time.

My main re-decoration fetish is for new bookshelves / cabinets. At least twice a year I realise that our books / videos etc are starting to overflow again and so I turn to my loving husband to provide me with more shelving.

This year I am trying to get ahead of the growth by getting at least 2 bookshelves made at the one time which will go from the floor to the ceiling. Problem is I’m running out of places to put them.

Of course each new bookshelf that we get leads to the whole house being re-arranged to fit it in.

S’funny… you don’t look like Mrs Skeezix…

The whole of the human condition can be explained by the conflict between the desire for change and the desire for stability. Thus, we stay in the same house but rearrange the furniture, repaint, and rebuild the cabinets.

Or we stay in the same country but stage a revolution to rearrange our government. It’s just like wallpapering.

It is also 3:16 in the morning, and it’s possible that won’t make any sense once I’ve had a little sleep.

I think that FisherQueen has hit it precisely !!!

At school, I was always trying to think of ways to rearrange my dorm furniture. It’s always bugged me that my bedroom at home has pretty much only one possible furniture configuration because I have to share it with my little brother.
