Character Names you love

Grima Wormtongue

My favorite was Picov Andropov.

I’ve loved several of the names mentioned here (High on the list is lawyer Bob Loblaw–never fails to make me giggle) but the character name that I’ve loved since the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird is Boo Radley. I don’t know exactly why it appeals to me so much but it does.

Later I named a cat Boo Radley. My Boo never rescued a young boy but he was a large cat with a gentle nature.

Hercules Grytpype-Thynne.

Raymond Luxury Yacht (pronounced “Throatwobbler Mangrove”)

Amanda Hugginkis

Harlan Ellison’s Cordwainer Bird

One from my radio days: Geoffrey French-Snogg, aka “Mr Geoffrey, Roving Lifestyle Reporter.”

Mike Hunt

Jethro Q Walrustitty

Nigel Incubator-Jones

Anne Elk

Adolf Hilter

Heinrich Bimmler

Hermann McGoering

Ron Ribbentrop

This thread reminds me of Roger Ebert’s First Law of Funny Names: “No names are funny unless used by W.C. Fields or Groucho Marx. Funny names, in general, are a sign of desperation at the screenplay level.”

I’m not sure I agree. I also like some of the names mentioned in this thread.

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr
Anne Uumellmahaye

Hiro Protagonist

I already mentioned him upthread.

Sorry, missed that. It’s a long thread with a lot of names now. Excellent name though.

Or Plenty O’Toole, a woman with a male porn name for some reason.

Who was one of the producers of the show. I always wondered, as the on-screen Davola got weirder and weirder, did real-life Davola have second thoughts about (presumably) giving permission to use his name?

Especially because I assume he’d be meeting people who’d respond “Joe Davola? THE Joe Davola? ‘Oh, you’re not crazy, that’s perfectly normal, Joe!’ Davola?”

.

That would also be my vote for best opening line of a book (one of the Narnia ones)… That C. S. Lewis, what a whacky guy.

The name of Lana Wood’s mammary-gifted character in the movie Diamonds are Forever

“Named after your father, no doubt,” Bond comment drily

Lana was Natalie Wood’s sister (born Svetlana Lisa Gurdin), and she had a fair career in film and TV. She’s still around, and 78 years old.

Another Seinfeld producer whose name got used as a character was Alec Berg. “Great John Houseman name…Alec Berrrrrg.”

Amelia Bedelia. Loved it when I was 5 and still do.
