Charles Manson taken to Hospital.

2016 didn’t get Charlie. Maybe 2017 will.

This could be welcome news for his victim’s families.

I’m going to hate 2016 for a long while, especially if Charlie croaks a week into this year.

It will be interesting if we are ever able to bring the dead back to life.

“That’s one life sentence done, only eight more to go!”

Interesting that the prison hospital isn’t treating him. This has to be a pretty serious development.

There’s a poster here that is a prison doctor. Ive read his posts many times. Maybe he’ll share what goes into a decision like this. There’s significant security issues sending a mass murderer to a public hospital.

His room won’t be near as nice, but I imagine that the security surrounding him will be just a little less than what the President would get.

Qadgop will eventually show up to comment on this, I’m sure.

When I worked in hospitals, we had inmates as patients all the time (although I’m not aware of any high-profile inmates, with one sort-of-an-exception). No matter where they came from, there would always be an officer in the room with them and one in the hallway, even if the patient was too sick to be going anywhere. In some cases, it could potentially be to protect other patients.

And then there was the time when I was in school, working at the big state university hospital, and about a dozen big, huge state troopers surrounded a heavily tattooed man in an orange jumpsuit, with his arms and legs all manacled together, escorting him through the lobby. That was quite a sight, and I guessed this man did something pretty bad.

The closest thing to a high-profile inmate I can think of was a man who had been the subject of an all-points bulletin - and then the next evening, he showed up in the census of the psychiatric unit. One of our technicians recognized the name and was about to call that floor to let them know he was there, and I told her that they probably knew exactly who they were dealing with and what to do about it. Most likely, he was arrested and threatened or even attempted suicide, which was a very common reason for them to be admitted.

Manson would, of course, be subjected to the same privacy issues as any other patient, famous or not.

p.s. Most prison “hospitals” are basically infirmaries; you can get, for instance, IV hydration or have a cut sewn up, but they are not set up to do intensive care treatment or perform surgery - or, for that matter, to deliver babies which is a common thing in women’s prisons.

Let him die.

I feel horrible for the victims families knowing that Manson is at a hospital when there was no help for their love ones . What waste of money , I don’t see why he didn’t get the death sentence !

He did get a death sentence. But before he was executed, the California Supreme Court ruled that capital punishment was unconstitutional in that state and everyone on death row had their sentence commuted to life imprisonment.

Perhaps they don’t have a Dr. Kevorkian on staff.

Yes, sending a seriously ill 82 year old to hospital is just a time bomb waiting to go off.

The death penalty was reinstated in 1978. They should have un-commuted their sentences.

An 82 year old mass murderer with a talent for talking others into doing Very Bad Things - Manson didn’t rely on brute, physical strength for his evil acts, he relied on charisma and talking. Best not to underestimate the man.

I like to think we’re better than killers - the most important thing is not killing him, it’s making sure he can never harm anyone else ever again. Outside of that, I’d prefer that we as a society be merciful rather than vindictive, even if on a gut level I understand the urge to give in to revenge and related emotions.

Schrödinger’s Manson.

To be “merciful” to a monster like Manson is to deny justice to his victims. It has nothing to do with vindictiveness or revenge. In general I’m opposed to the death penalty, but I’m willing to make an exception in this case.

Maybe 2017 will compensate for 2016 by getting all the jerks?

That would be an ex post facto law. Following the decision of the California Supreme Court, life imprisonment was the most severe penalty available in California.

When the California state constitution was amended to permit the death penalty, that was a change to the severity of the penalty. Increased penalties cannot be applied retroactively.

What if Manson’s “illness” is actually a ruse, and Squeaky has assembled a group of elderly followers who will spring their leader?

I won’t miss him if he goes, but in terms of killing people, he’s a piker. If you want to cause death and misery on an industrial scale, go into politics.

Well, OK, I understand that’s your opinion, however, I can not in my mind justify killing a human being if we can render him non-hazardous through less drastic means.

And I don’t see how killing a murderer does “justice” for his victims - it’s not like theft were you can compensate someone for their loss by returning money or a material object. Killing a murderer doesn’t bring anyone back to life.
