Charlie & the Chocolate Factory: Trailer #2 is up

I couldn’t find the second (new) trailer at IMDB, but here is a link to one from AOL:

This one has more dimension to it, different music, and is longer than the first, with more dialogue from the characters. I couldn’t make it out too well in low res, though.

I hadn’t realised it was the kid from Finding Neverland and Two Brothers…he’s pretty decent.

I’m still a little nervous about it. It appears that Johnny Depp is really into that character, which is good, but I’m not sure that I like the character. I guess I won’t know for sure until I see it. Willie Wonka has a much different feel to him than the Gene Wilder character does, that’s for sure.

I can’t wait! If ever a director was destined to do remake…

After watching it, I’m very excited about seeing the movie. Mainly because the movie has the sequence with the squirrels that the old movie removed in favor of a tamer scene with geese. Also, Johnny Depp is the man.

I am cautiously optimistic…but i do have some reservations. It seems like this movie was meant to be made by this director with this lead actor…but I am still left speechless by the original. Wilder IS Wonka in my mind, and the highest praise I could ever give Depp is his ability to match that performance. Wilder is always just on the edge of madness during the film…it’s amazing.

Am I the only one that finds it creepy that they made Depp seem like Michael Jackson? Pale face with long straight black hair, has lots of money, taunts kids and their parents to hang out with him at Neverland/Chocolate Factory, really odd fellow, ends up having feelings for a young boy?

Actually Depp intended to seem more like Marilyn Manson.

I gotta tell you, if people read “Michael Jackson” into this performance this movie could potentially go down faster at the box office than a crackwhore sucking rich midgets.

“Don’t touch that squirrel’s nuts!” heh-heh

Uggh. Don’t like what I saw - JD seemed a little too pretentious/fake for me.

I still contend Burton should have cast Christopher Walken as Wonka. Nobody is better at being creepy and charming and hilarious and threatening at the same time, plus he’s an old-school song-and-dance man as well. Oh well, Depp is my favorite actor, but this seems like the role Walken was born to play.

Good call on Walken, but Depp’s no slouch.

I started a thread on precisely this, last month.

Johnny Depp seems to be playing the character American, not British, which is odd. Also, this movie is supposed to be much truer to the book than the Gene Wilder version, which is great, but when I read the book, I never got a sense that Willie Wonka was supposed to be this creepy. He’s supposed to be somewhat infuriating, pretending to be deaf when he was asked questions he didn’t want to answer, and a little manic (for instance: the two elevators running in opposite directions along the same track, and him thinking this was perfectly all right), but not creepy.

Tim Burton is great for this, though. He can perfectly capture the essence of the book: An entire, well-imagined, self-contained magical world existing mysteriously in the middle of the real world. Charlie and Grandpa Joe look perfect, and the narrator’s voice is totally right. I think Johnny Depp could even have been great playing Willie Wonka as he was meant to be played. He just doesn’t seem to be playing him that way. And why doesn’t he have a goatee?

I’ll probably see the movie anyway. I’ve maintained my own mental conception of the book despite the first movie, so I think I’m safe to see this one, even if it isn’t quite right.

I was about four when I saw the Gene Wilder version for the first time. As I recall, the Oompa-Loompas scared the hell out of me. I still find them a little unsettling.

Christopher Walken… hmm. Interesting. He might also be a little frightening for the movie (think Annie Hall’s brother), but it could work.
