Charlie Wilson's War

She’s in 2 scenes - in Charlie’s office, and later in Charlie’s apartment, when it’s obvious she’s not quite as buttoned-up as the first scene - IIRC she’s wearing only a shirt, and is preparing to sleep with Charlie. She’s got some dialogue there. Then he takes a call from Julia Roberts, and Blunt falls asleep waiting for him.

She’s also in the deleted zombie scene.

We watched this in my public management class last year, to show, I suppose, how things really get done in Washington. I thought it was pretty good.

John Oliver on The Daily Show had a wonderful overview of Afghanistan. “Their chief exports are heroin…and vengeance.”

I like Sorkin and I did enjoy the movie, but I have one really big problem with it.

The movie made it a goal to humanize the Afghan fighters. I remember politicians arguing that the Afghans would not know how to use new weapons even if we gave it to them, and then Wilson standing up for the fighters saying that they could handle the weapons.

That’s was very nice of Sorkin, but why don’t the Russian soldiers deserve the same treatment? The dialog between the two helicopter pilots made them seem like inhuman killing machines. Why the hypocrisy? Why go out of your way to humanize Afghan fighters (where Al Qaeda was among the fighters) and then dehumanize the soldiers of another country?

That was her? I guess it’s because I haven’t seen her in much so I can’t recognize her by sight, but I had no idea it was the same girl. I thought the girl in his apartment was just his floozy du jour (she was in a shirt, w/a bra & panties underneath; I noticed that much). OK, I guess her on-screen time was a little more than I thought at first, but still, 6th billing? Again, her character contributed nothing to plot advancement but as more icing on the “Charlie’s a womanizer” cake.

That’s one hell of an agent.

I don’t think Blunt was that well known before that movie was she? Her main role in a big movie before that was in the Devil Wears Prada. The rest of her roles were on TV or in small movies.

Not even A Few Good Men. I have nothing against it, and I’d watch it if the chance came up, but it didn’t interest me when it was in the theater and I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. Oooh, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson in a military drama, hold me back. (really the only thing that does interest me is one day finding out what the hell the catchphrase “You can’t handle the truth!” is all about)

Emily Blunt is about to get a lot more attention because she’s starring in The Young Victoria (as in, the Queen) and might (or might not, I haven’t kept up with the buzz) get a lot of awards attention. When Charlie Wilson’s War came out, while most people only knew her from The Devil Wears Prada (“I’m just one stomach flu away from my perfect weight!”) some of us had seen her in My Summer of Love, Irresistible, The Jane Austen Book Club, Wind Chill and Dan in Real Life besides Prada. Many were surprised it was such a small role so I agree that there’s probably footage cut from the final film.
