I can see a list when I click the words Charter Member after the name of anyone posting in this thread. (There’s a pull-down menu at the top that also allows me to see Members, moderators, Retired_Straight_Dope_Staff, et al.)

Nars, so you came over from alt.fans.ceciladams?? Way cool!! We knew about it on AOL and it got a mention now and then, and we did know that some folks came here from there as well as from the AOL SDMB, but I haven’t heard much about it since the dawn.
ETA: What was the structure of it? I assume like other newsgroups it was intrinsically threaded, but what about larger divisions, did you have the equivalent of forums?
Yes, alt.fans.ceciladams. I don’t remember any structure to it but it’s been so long that there could have been. I also had a question printed in the third Straight Dope book. I’ve been a fan for a long time.
It was alt.fan.cecil-adams to be precise. And it’s still going, albeit at an extremely reduced posting volume. I remember that group fondly, as well as the related alt.folklore.urban group that was closely related.
Oh yeah, alt.folklore.urban; I remember that. I was even instrumental in CONFIRMING a legend as fact (the one about murderers in a home invasion, finding a camera, taking pictures, and leaving the camera behind).
Oh wow, that’s near-celebrity status in my book. Only thing better would have been if you had gotten confirmation of the break-in toothbrush photo story.
It wasn’t due to any supreme effort on my part; I lucked into having a retired FBI cow-orker who not only had a copy of the case files, but also the photos.
Thank you for that tip. One thing I didn’t realize is that a Charter Member could have joined as late as 2007.
I was on back in the usenet days as well. But wasn’t there an alt.fans.Straightdope or something like that?
