Charter Members: Who and how many are left?

I’ll have to check.

Gimme five bees for a quarter you’d say.

Though I could have sworn I was reading SD back when I had just graduated from an AOL membership. I know I was away from AOHell and using 99main as my dial up ISP as early as 2000 - I was playing Everquest back in 2000. Could it have been under my previous email addy? margali@99main?

You registered on 2-24-2004. Changing your email wouldn’t affect that.

Unless he had more than one account.

So, what’s the difference between guest, member and charter member? Do members get more legroom and charter members get free drinks or what?

Anyone who joins the site is a guest. If you pay for a subscription, you become a member (no ads, can have a special user title, your post count and location shows). If you paid for a subscription when the site first went pay-to-post and maintained your membership since then, you’re a charter member.

Free drinks during happy hour, and all the peanuts and pretzels you can eat.

Tripler
The entreés are still a little pricey though.

And we get our subscriptions for half price.

I doubt the field is even accessible without some jiggery-pokery as the numbers are probably what the software uses to distinguish accounts and they want to avoid some well meaning but incompetent admin changing user numbers and corrupting or losing accounts and then complaining to vbulletin or whomever about this cruddy forum software.

Or even (Og forbid) accidentally banning everyone.

That’s unacceptable. I volunteer for that position.

Been here since 2001.
Fun fact: I found the website six months earlier and didn’t realize it had a forum.:o

Don’t forget the big cookout for us at Ed’s place every Michaelmas.

Still here. #66, came over from AOL, etc.

I saw a thread about someone complaining that they had just missed their subscription deadline and should be allowed to be a Charter Member because it was just a simple mistake. I smiled thinking, you didn’t keep track and only have yourself to blame. I’ve got another 4 months. But, what the heck, I’ll just resubscribe early.

Uh, oh.

Man, was I Pissed! How could they do that to me?! I didn’t even get any notice!

So I calmed down and realized it must have been when I was laid off and I forgot to change my email… Yup. Crap. So I fumed a bit and after awhile thought, I subscribed to support this place with a little bit of money. So I still like the place. So I subscribed again.

Personally, I’m quite happy to shell out the annual fee of $ 79.99 + applicable sales tax and handling to maintain my Charter Member status. I do find it a bit odd that for the last 6 years I’ve had to leave the payment at a drop at the Joyce Kilmer Rest Stop on the New Jersey Turnpike…

While I get the reference, that statement is inaccurate. Some '99ers were not AOLers, such as me.

Technically, it is if you were a paid subcriber when the board ceased being pay-to-post. Members joined during that period. You didn’t have to pay up day one, you had to be paid when the hoards were let back in. And have maintained since.

I’m still around, but just barely. This board has lost its raison d’être (fighting ignorance is no longer paramount); I rarely post anymore here, and I’m unlikely to renew.
