Charter Members: Who and how many are left?

Anyone who joins the site is a guest. If you pay for a subscription, you become a member (no ads, can have a special user title, your post count and location shows). If you paid for a subscription when the site first went pay-to-post and maintained your membership since then, you’re a charter member.

The special user title - custom title - is a separate cost available to members.

2000 for me.

And every time the renewal comes up, I ask myself why I’m wasting the money. Then I justify it by saying that I’m paying a fee to not be bombarded with bullshit advertising.

I was a charter member. I only kept it up because a.) I liked the discount and b.) for awhile, only members could use the search engine. Once they changed the latter, I eventually said screw it, and became a guest.

I started lurking around 2000, but didn’t join until aught-two. Thirteen years, a hair over 13,000 posts, so it looks like my pace is about one Megapost per year.

I think you mean one Kilopost per year. Unless most are truly epic and ginourmous works.

I don’t think there is any way to parse out a complete list of charter members. At least I wasn’t able to get one in the 10 minutes I spent trying anyway (most of which was just waiting to see what search results I’d get), so there must not be a way.

Another Charter Member checking in. I joined sometime in 2003 I think. I forgot to re-up a few years ago and lost my Charter status, and had to do the requisite hoop-jumping to get it back. Worth it? Ehh, I don’t know. I liked the comparison above to NPR. If I’m going to spend time hanging out here, might as well throw in some bucks to support it.

I believe Charter Membership was available to those who signed up before April 21, 2004.
