Chat for introverts

No worries, this isn’t the chat that Discourse is creating. It’s just another thread that I got permission to start for people who want to post about stuff that doesn’t really fit in a topic. I just like that it’s more real time than in other places since I can see who is responding.

Chat can be cool as long as it doesn’t take over. That happened on one fan forum I liked. They made a Discord and all the discussion kinda moved over there.

I tried to use it, but it was frustrating. I didn’t have the time to think about what I wanted to say before the topic would move on, and it was hard to go back and read through what had been said.

I actually thought the SDMB had a chat at one point: an IRC chatroom, and then a Facebook group. The latter, though, I won’t participate in due to the real name issue.

Discourse could definitely support this if desired, and it might be interesting to have as an option at topic creation time (or something that could be changed by the OP). It wouldn’t have to interfere with anything else, just provide a quick reply box that posted on hitting Enter.

Highly agreed. I’ve been in heavily trafficked chat rooms before and sometimes it drives me up the wall to find content that was posted only yesterday. One thing I like about Discourse is that each post is identified by a number and corresponding URL, and I can just input the URL and it’d take me there directly, without having to scroll up for an inordinate amount of time to reach it as with a chat room.

Same here. That’s why advertising on other mediums doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. At least for me, that’s not going to happen.

This is why I am excited to offer a hybrid just in time chat in Discourse. Like a just in time flash mob chat, by topic, or by category (or tag). If a number of people are idling in that topic or category or tag… offer chat to those {x} people.

Yes longer thoughts is the goal, but sometimes you want your chocolate and peanut butter mixed together… and it’s nice to divert the low effort “howzitgoin?” Posts from the longer form thoughts. Why not offer both at once, depending on your tastes at the moment? Chat is better for rapid back and forth brainstorming and it can let you workshop a better longer form post for the topic. Maybe we really can have our cake and eat it, too. (Also ctrl+enter submits a post)

Chat is short term memory; posts and topics are long term memory. We need both.

So if we all talked (typed) at you, that would be bad? Or does posting not count?

For me, posting is different. It’s not really talking. Maybe you feel the same way.

Absolutely! That’s what this thread is for.

Haven’t chatted with random strangers since the ICQ days.

So, um… a/s/l?

Do you like… stuff?

Howzabout them Canadiens, great OT goal there.

Except not so random here since we all have usernames and only one identity attached to it.

no, no american sign language here /s

yes, I like lots of . . .stuff.

hmm, not sure what sport you’re talking about but howzabout them canadians?

yeah, people can be tricky. gotta watch for that

Hey, I like stuff too.
Mostly good stuff.

Some mediocre stuff.

Occasional bad stuff.

Hmm.

(breaks eye contact, focuses on drink, very subtly moves along to the music)

you’re at a bar? must be an extrovert :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hey.

Uhhh…

Nice weather today huh?

Depending on the crowd, I’m either going to let the extroverts do their thing, or if I’m comfortable with the group I might open up, it really depends on the situation.

Hey. Welcome to chat. Yup, nice weather. . . somewhere in the world.

Hey, nothin’ wrong with sittin’ by yourself with a drink, either! Calms the nerves, y’know?

Deep.
