If you really want to save money, try ZIG ZAG brand tobacco, available in menthol or non. You can buy filters and papers, pre rolled filter tubes or smoke 'em without filters. The taste and quality is equal or BETTER than premium smokes like Marlboro or Newport, and way better than the best generic brands. I smoked Newport for over twenty years, and now, when I buy a pack, they don’t taste as good as the Zig’s. Stay away from most other brands. Most brands like Kite and Top are horrible, although DRUM tobacco is good if you like the (original non-filtered) Pall Mall european style taste.
A 6 oz can costs around seven bucks, a hundred filters cost a dollar a bag, and Top papers are less than a buck for a hundred. The pre rolled filter tubes cost about a buck per hundred too, but they’re kind of a pain, and you have to buy a special machine to pack 'em.
For ten bucks, you got yourself the equivalent of at least a carton of smokes.
On a semi related note…Does anybody know why loose tobacco isn’t taxed to death like cigarettes?

Yeah, if you’re looking to pay less for this habit you definitely want to roll your own. It is ridiculously cheap. If you buy the filter tubes and a machine (I recommend the Bugler device rather than Zig Zag and definitely over Del Rey, but Zig Zag is really good tobacco) it is $10-12 for a carton. If you handroll, and you can buy individual filters, it is more like $13 for a carton and a half. The cans (except TOP brand) keep the tobacco pretty fresh the whole time. If want to handroll but aren’t very good at it you can buy little machines (zig zag makes a great one) but if you just practice during the use of a can you’ll have it down fairly quickly.
