Where can I find cheap airfares on the internet? Cheaper than the regular rates that can be found using Kayak or similar websites. They don’t have to be to any particular destination, or on any particular day, I’m just looking to get out of town for a few days at a time on the cheap.
Does Southwest fly anywhere near you? Their rates are always pretty good.
Maybe check AirTran. Sometimes you can get cheaper rates directly through their website than you can on any of the online travel agency sites. I would also look at Allegiant Air, as they sometimes have good deals, but your departure and destination cities are limited.
Otherwise, I would check a site like FareCompare on a daily basis to see what comes up as the cheapest destination (in a given region) for your departure city or cities of choice. The trick to getting good fares is to be as flexible as possible.
Thanks for the suggestions, here’s what I found:
For a non-holiday flight from OKC to LAS (Fri-Sun), in February.
Southwest-$380
Airtran-$325
Cheapest mainline from Kayak (Frontier+USAir)-$273
Allegiant does not fly from here, but has a $208 fare from Wichita, which is only a 2.5 hour drive from here.
The revelation in all this, I suspect, is not that the airlines are screwing us, but rather that flying out of Oklahoma City sucks just as much as living in it.
Priceline will save you money and eventually get you where you want to go, but be advised that you have no control over the routing. We used them once to go to Las Vegas. We got a great rate: $178 round trip from Houston. They flew us Houston-Denver-Las Vegas and right after we landed in Denver, the airport shut down for 12 hours due to snow.
I love Priceline for hotel rooms, but I’d only use it for airfares if I didn’t have a job and could just go whenever I pleased. The lack of control over flight times is a deal breaker. The risk of getting a non-refundable ticket for a morning flight on a Friday (when I could only fly after work) could be mitigated by flying on a Saturday instead. Of course, I’d then wind up arriving at midnight. Way too much chance of wasted days.
With some airlines, you can get on a mailing list for last-minute cheap airfares week-to-week.
I just went home for the holidays to OKC (from NYC) and had to pay $600. I guess it’s because it’s not a major hub, but it sucked having to pay that much.
So yes, OKC sucks for more than one reason.
I just ran a general search, OKC to LAS without departure dates (just looking for the cheapest fare), on cheapair.com and was getting listings for Frontier Air starting at $178 ranging up to $198 and some higher.
That’s roundtrip too, some travel dates are restricted but there are departures and arrivals almost every day of the week excluding some weekends.
Looks like the secret to getting a good deal on a flight is being flexible and not having to leave and return on a weekend.
That is exactly the kind of website I was looking for. Thanks.
Travelworm.com is also good because they specialize in Las Vegas and can get you hooked up with excellent rates on rooms at casinos along with a decent airfare.
Find the best fare on a web based travel agency. Look at the Airline with that low fare’s web site. Chances are it’ll be lower.
How 'bout them Sonics, err, Thunder!
